Thirupporur Khandasamy temple is an ancient temple, built during the Pallava period in the early 19th century. The idol or the incarnation of the Lord Muruga is well known as the Swayambu Murthi, which is layered by an anthill. People believe that the temple was discovered by the Chidambara Swamigal in the same anthill. The existing idol was re-established by the rulers in the Pallava period. Chidambara Swamigal and his descendants are responsible for the existence of the temple today. IMPORTANCE/SIGNIFICANCE Lord Muruga, is well known as the Kanthaswamy in this temple, and is graced with the Valli and Deivanai. The Lord is incarnated as the Suyambu avatar and is considered strange of its kind. The place was primarily called as the Yuthapuri. Nearby city is Tiruchandoor, another temple city in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is believed that Thiruporur got its name from the skies where the Lord Muruga fought with the evils, as mentioned in the Puranas. FACTS/MYTHOLOGY The temple is more signified due to its east facing location and architecture. A palmaya tree is located in the east side that is believed to have the Khanda Perumal on a small peetha or the seating that was specifically designed for the purpose. The main history behind this temple is that Lord Muruga fought with the Tharaga in this historical place and made him His slave. Since he was defeated in the war, the name came to be known as the Por (In Tamil, the word Por means war or battle). There are various stone inscriptions related to the temple and the sand there is termed as the Samarapuri or the Yudhapuri, that holds the importance. FESTIVALS/EVENTS/GATHERINGS Since the temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan, all the festivals and the special days that are considered in other deities are equally important for this temple as well. Some of the notable events include Chithirai in every month, rarely once or twice or even more than that; vaikashi festivals dedicated for Gurupoojai, ani, avani for vinayaga chathirthi, iyyappasi for Diwali festival, every Monday the Somavara Vratham or the fasting is also followed by the devotees, and a lot more. Thaippoosam is the most important festive treaties of the temple as Lord Muruga is very much favored on this day. Thaippoosam (also referred to as Thaipusam) is one of the oldest and traditional festivals celebrated for the Lord Muruka. It is believed that Vel or the spear would take of your adverse characters and complicated natures and reflect in a happy and peaceful...

I recently visited the Arulmigu Kanthaswamy Thiruporur Temple, located near Mahabalipuram, and it was a spiritually enriching experience. This ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Murugan, exudes divine energy and historical significance. The intricate carvings, towering gopuram, and serene atmosphere make it a must-visit for devotees and history enthusiasts alike.

One of the most special aspects of this temple is the Tuesdays, which are considered highly auspicious for Lord Murugan. On this day, the temple sees a large number of devotees who come to seek the Lord’s blessings. The special poojas and abhishekams conducted on Tuesdays create a deeply devotional experience, and the positive vibrations in the temple are truly mesmerizing.

The temple’s history dates back several centuries, and its Dravidian-style architecture adds to its grandeur. The peaceful surroundings and the well-maintained premises enhance the spiritual ambiance. The priests perform rituals with great dedication, and the chanting of hymns elevates the entire experience.

Apart from its religious significance, the temple is also known for its connection to Saint Chidambara Swamigal, who played a vital role in its restoration. The sacred temple tank, believed to have healing properties, adds to the temple’s charm.

Yet another Historic Murugan Temple from Pallavan Era. Very Spacious and fortunately it was not very crowded, despite it being a Sunday Murugan fought demons in three geographies – on land in Thirupurakundram, on sea in Thiruchendur and in air in Thiruporur. After slaying slaying Asura Shoorapadman in Thiruchendur, Murugan as Kandaswamy encounters Asura Thalayaya. He fights fiercely and kills him in the war carried out in Air (Ether). This signifies victory over Pride and arrogance and helps devotees to overcome these negative traits. Thiruporur gets its name after “Por” in Tamizh means war/battle waged by Murgan to vanquish Thalayaya asura. Tirupporur temple has Pallava and Chola inscriptions from as early as the 10th and 12th century respectively. There is an inscription on a stone pillar that confirms that temple must have been built by Pallavas because of the engravings, Atyantakama Pallava and Adiranachandra clearly attributable to Pallava Supremo, Rajasimha (Narasimha Varma II). Though it is clear that Tirupporur was its resplendent best during that era, it somehow fell off the glory in the interim until Thiruporur Adheenam Founder, Srimad Chidambara Swamigal, descendant of a poet of Madurai Tamil Sangam, acting on a vision he got of Madurai Meenakshi with instructions to restore and rebuild Temple for Murugan in Thiruporur somewhere around 17th Century. Some of the inscriptions also refer to Thiruporur as Samarapuri and Yuddhapuri (all meaning the same – Place of the battle)
