Review of Garhwali Museum, Lansdowne ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5) My visit to the Garhwali Museum, also known as the Darwan Singh Museum, in Lansdowne, Uttarakhand, was an enriching dive into the region’s military and cultural heritage. Located near the Parade Ground in the heart of this tranquil hill station, the museum is a tribute to the valor of the Garhwal Rifles and the legacy of Darwan Singh Negi, the first Indian Victoria Cross recipient. Housed in a well-maintained two-story building established in 1983, it offers a captivating experience for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike. The museum’s collection is impressive, showcasing an array of artifacts like vintage uniforms, rare photographs, medals, and weapons, each narrating the heroic tales of the Garhwal Rifles from World War I to modern times. Detailed displays of battle scenes, citations, and personal belongings of soldiers provide deep insights into their sacrifices and achievements. The exhibits are well-organized, though I wished for more interactive elements to engage younger visitors. Photography isn’t allowed inside, which preserves the artifacts but might disappoint some. Outside, a charming rose garden adds to the serene ambiance, perfect for a brief stroll. The museum’s location near the Garhwal Rifles War Memorial and Gandhi Park makes it easy to include in a day’s itinerary. Open from 9:00 AM to noon (except Sundays and holidays), it’s best visited between March and November for pleasant weather. The entry fee of Rs. 50 is reasonable, though card payments for tickets would be a welcome addition. Overall, the Garhwali Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in military history or the cultural fabric of Uttarakhand. It’s a poignant reminder of the region’s proud legacy, though minor enhancements like guided tours could elevate the experience. I left feeling inspired and more connected to the...

A must-visit place in Lansdowne for history lovers and patriots!

Garhwal Army Museum is truly one of the highlights of Lansdowne. It’s a well-maintained and peaceful place that beautifully showcases the rich history, bravery, and legacy of the Garhwal Rifles Regiment. If you’re someone who appreciates military history and the sacrifices of our soldiers, this museum will definitely touch your heart.

The exhibits are very informative – from medals, weapons, uniforms, and rare photographs to inspiring stories of valor. You also get to learn about the contribution of the Garhwal Rifles in various wars and operations. Everything is neatly arranged and gives you a glimpse into the disciplined and honorable life of an Indian Army soldier.

One important point to keep in mind – photography is not allowed inside the museum, which can be a bit disappointing for those who love to capture memories, but it's understandable due to the sensitivity and nature of the content displayed.

🎟️ Entry tickets are just ₹30 per adult, which is very reasonable. 🅿️ Free parking is available, and from there it’s just a short 300-meter walk to the museum. The path is pleasant and adds to the experience.

The staff at the museum deserve special mention – they are polite, respectful, and very cooperative. You can feel the discipline and hospitality in the way they handle everything. They also answer questions and help you understand the exhibits better if you’re curious.

Right opposite the museum is the Army Parade Ground, where you can sit, relax, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. It’s a great spot to rest after exploring the museum – calm, clean, and scenic.

Overall, this place is not just a museum, it’s an emotion. A salute to the brave hearts who protect us. Definitely recommend visiting if you're...

Review as of June 14: Named after Darwan Singh, the first India to awarded Victoria Crosss for his exploits in World War I The Museum houses numerous antique artifacts belonging to the Garhwal Rifles. Beautiful two storey building exhibits Battle scenes of Pre-Independence and Post-Independence periods, portraits of the brave soldiers, achievements, customs, traditions, rich certificates and documents of world war I and II, war trophies, antiques, old dresses, medals, appreciations. It has swords, guns, grenade launchers. I had visited the museum with my 12 year old and he was absolutely involved in looking through the artifacts. Entry Fee for 1 adult and 1 child: Rs.60. They accept it via UPI only Timings: 9 AM - 12 PM and 3 PM - 6 PM on all days except on holidays and Sundays. Near the Museum you can also see an aircraft exhibit. It was part of INS Viraat.

A well maintained museum and a must visit place when in Lansdowne. Typically it is best to set aside 1-2 hours for this place. Ticket price was INR 20 in 2018. It majorly comprises of a collection of guns, weapons used in the war by the Garhwal Regiment. Some weapons used by other countries in war are also a part of the museum. It is closed on Wednesdays so plan you trip accordingly. Just outside the museum there is a very nice ground of the regiment and a nice sight in mornings and evenings.
