Vasai, also called Bassein, lies about 48 kms north of Mumbai just across the Ulhas River. The fort in the old city was the headquarter of the Portuguese in the north, next in importance to Goa. The coastal land-fort of Vasai was surrounded by sea on three sides and to the landside it had a moat which was filled by sea-water. Its 4.5kms long strong stone wall had 11 bastions. The fort had two gates – the westward land-gate. There was also a small citadel in the fort. Well – equipped with water-tanks, store-houses, armoury, etc., the fort also had fields for growing grains and vegetables. All the old structures inside the wall are now in ruins.

Vasai came into prominence when the ancient harbour of Sopara (now Nalsopara village, 10kms north of Vasai) became unfit for use. However, Vasai continued to be a trading centre. A small fort-like structure was erected here in 1533 AD by Malik Tughan, the commander of Bahadur Shah, Sultan of Gujarat. In 1534 AD, the Portuguese forced Bahadur Shah to cede Vasai in perpetuity. Here, first they constructed the citadel (Balekilla), and then in 1590AD, the present fort with its ramparts and other structures came into being. For the next about 150 years Vasai enjoyed opulence and prosperity. The Portuguese built here magnificent houses, convents, churches and an orphanage. Only the Hidalgos (Portuguese nobles) were allowed to reside within the fort walls. Vasai was the main naval base and sort of ship-building centre of the Portuguese. The end came in 1739AD, when Chimaji Appa, Peshwa Bajirav’s brother, stormed the fort and captured it with great loss of life. It was here in 1802 AD, the Peshwa Bajirav II signed the infamous “Treaty of Bassein” which virtually dissolved the Maratha Confederacy. Finally, the fort and the city of Vasai was ceded to the British in 1817 AD.

The location is absolutely breathtaking, boasting a serene and tranquil ambiance with a refreshing morning climate. What adds to its charm is the minimal presence of people on this pristine beach. However, there is a downside - the ocean water appears to be contaminated with oils, which diminishes the overall appeal.

If the government takes the initiative to maintain and preserve this area, it has the potential to become an outstanding picnic spot and an excellent beach destination. Its proximity to Mumbai makes it an ideal location for people to stay and unwind during the weekends, reminiscent of the popular Goan beaches. With proper care and attention, this place can transform into a true gem, attracting locals and...

It is a almost five-kilometer long reasonably clean beach that was not crowded on the Tuesday that I visited it.

Some groups of youngsters were running or jogging between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, which was fine. Two or three people rode a horse or a horsecart, which seemed pleasant to the eye. But later, some younger children started playing cricket there, which was not cool.

Anyway, walking barefoot on the beach was really enjoyable until the water receded and exposed clusters of somewhat sharp broken seashells.

The view of the...

Since it is less crowded you can enjoy a peaceful sunset or sunrise if you are a morning person. Just no 4 wheelers or auto rickshaw allowed after a certain boundary . Therefore either you can take a long walk to the beach or nice horsecart ride for fun or your own bikes are preferred. Beach is much cleaner than other mumbai beaches. May be because it is not that much famous like other beaches. And that's why I liked it personally as I could enjoy it more. Ideal for pre wedding and other photoshoot.

The beach has a very good view and is comparatively clean as against other beaches in the region. We went just before monsoon starts so it was very clean without any litter, however our second visit immediately after the first week of downpouring rain was uneventful as we could see all trash litter on the beach probably washed ashore from the sewers of Vasai and Bhayander. It was Saturday afternoon tuis no crowd to see and it was a quiet place during our first visit.
