Ballavpur 🌿 🌳Ballavpur Sanctuary🌳 Bolpur is a well-known destination for Bengalis who are obsessed with the memory of the poet. The Ballabhpur Sanctuary (known to the locals as Deer Park) is located not far from Bolpur. In 1956, this place of Ballavpur was declared as a protected forest area. The sanctuary was later built in 1982 covering an area of about 2.012 sq km. Spotted deer-Axis axis is the main breeding ground for this sanctuary in the state and there is a deer roaming area spread over an area of about 40 hectares. From here deer are transferred to forests in other parts of India. In addition to chital deer, there are various species of trees like shawl, teak, child, jarul, kadam, palm, sonajhuri, jam, etc. In addition to chital deer, there are Hanuman, bham-cat, wild cat, fox and some number of hedgehogs. Apart from this, various reptiles, birds, butterflies and others can be seen in the sanctuary and adjoining areas. During the winter, some migratory birds can be seen in the adjacent ponds. In just 30-40 minutes, we have seen tia (rose ringed parakeet, etc.

Hard to believe that there is such a beautiful and secluded forest just beside Visva Bharati and in the heart of Shantiniketan. However, getting there using the Google Map navigation turned out to be bit of a problem. About 3 times, we ended up taking wrong turns and landing either in a very short alley or a closed road. Asking the local people was not of much help. So, the best is if you take a toto from your hotel. If you want to go by car, take the road beside Visva Bharati and follow it until you see the sign of the Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary. It was 2 minutes from the main road. There is no designated car parking but you can park at roadside. The sanctuary is quite large and we just covered a fraction of it. Intensely beautiful, secluded, and serene. Lots of deer roaming around. There was a nice lake flanked with fallen trees or curved tree branches. If you are out there in a winter afternoon with your friends and families, there are loads of places you can sit and have a great "adda" session. Only request, do not litter the place with plastics and leftovers.

Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary, located just 3 km from Santiniketan in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, is a tranquil retreat established in 1977. Spanning 200 hectares, it’s often called "Deer Park" due to its thriving population of spotted deer and blackbuck, alongside jackals, foxes, and diverse birdlife. The sanctuary features dense sal and cashew forests, grasslands, and three water bodies that attract migratory birds in winter. Two watchtowers offer scenic views, though thick foliage may limit visibility. Easily accessible from Bolpur (5.5 km), it’s a short toto ride from Santiniketan, with entry fees of Rs. 10 for adults and Rs. 20 for cameras. Open 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (closed Wednesdays), it’s best visited in winter for pleasant weather and birdwatching. While facilities are basic, its proximity to Santiniketan’s cultural sites makes it a perfect nature stop for a 1-2 hour visit.
