This temple is one of the oldest. It is in the heart of Koyambedu. The main deities are Vaikunda Perumal and Kangavalli Thayar. Both these sannidhis are divine and well maintained. There is also a sannidhi for andal here.
The display board said there are two vilvam trees along with one vepam (neem) tree which is a special occurrence.
Here they also have Urchavar of seetha devi and rama piran without lakshmanan and anjaneyar. This is also mainly known for as a sthalam where Seeta Pratiyar remained pregnant under the protection of Valmiki. Lavan and Kusan were born here. There is a stone idol for lava, kusa and valmiki.
Since seeta remained pregnant here, people pray for healthy child. Once they conceive or give birth, they offer fruits, jadai, bangles, dry fruits etc to Seeta and give vethala paaku to ladies who visit the temple.
I have been in Chennai for thirty five years and I knew about it only today. Thanks to my Sarala aunty for showing me this divine place.

Read moreVaikundavasa Perumal, Koyambedu is an ancient east facing temple. The main deity here appears in standing form with Sreedevi and Bhoodevi unlike the sitting form usualy depicted of him in Vaikunta. Lord Rama is seen here with Sita and without Lakshmana and Hanuman. He is robed with plants and leaves. Later an Anjaneya shrine has been constructed here. A carving of Sage Valmiki, Sita, Lava and Kucha are seen in a pillar. Arunagirinadar has mentioned this place as Kosainagar in Thirupugazh. The name Koyambedu is derived from the story that Lava and Kucha tied the Ko (the Horse of Rama) to the Ayam (Iron) Pedu (Fence). Saint Arunagiriar has described this place as Kosai Nagar in his Tirupugazh. A Neem tree is seen here merged with two Vilwa trees symbolizing the wedding of Shiva and Parvathi in the presence of Lord Vishnu and is called Parvathi...
Read moreWe visited Arulmigu Kanakavalli Thaayaar Udanurai Vaikundavasa Perumal Thirukoil on Rama Navami, and it was such a divine and spiritual experience. The temple was beautifully decorated for the festival, and the entire atmosphere was filled with devotion.
The highlight of our visit was the bhajans sung by devotees—it truly elevated the spiritual vibe and made the experience even more special. The darshan of Vaikundavasa Perumal and Kanakavalli Thaayaar was peaceful and fulfilling.
Despite the festive crowd, the temple was well-organized and maintained. The energy inside was calm and positive, making it a perfect place for inner peace.
This is a must-visit temple in Chennai, especially during festivals like Rama Navami, to witness the divine ambience and...
