KLUNGKUNG (a brief overview and history)

From Gelgel to Semarapura and Puputan (17th Century - 1908)

The 17th century marked a significant shift in Balinese governance. Prior to this, the powerful kingdom of Gelgel held sway over much of the island. However, internal conflicts and external threats from the Javanese Mataram kingdom led to Gelgel's decline.

Rise of Klungkung (1682):

Following Gelgel's fall, the seat of power moved to Klungkung, establishing the Gelgel dynasty's new capital under Dewa Agung Jambe. Klungkung emerged as a center of Balinese culture and a champion of tradition. This era saw the codification of the "Catur Arah" caste system, emphasizing social order and religious practices.

A Beacon of Culture:

Klungkung's reign as a dominant kingdom was marked by a flourishing of arts, literature, and dance. The "Wayang Wong" theatrical tradition and the "Kamasan" style of painting are attributed to this period. Klungkung also maintained a strong sense of Balinese identity, resisting external influences and maintaining a balance between different kingdoms on the island.

Puputan Klungkung (1908):

Dutch colonial ambitions clashed with Balinese resistance in the early 20th century. Klungkung's refusal to accept Dutch control over trade and surrender their royal regalia led to the tragic event of Puputan. This ritual suicide by the royal court and their followers in 1908 marked the end of Klungkung's independent rule.

Dutch Colonial Rule (1908 - 1949)

The Dutch takeover of Klungkung ushered in a new era of colonial governance:

Indirect Rule: The Dutch adopted a strategy of indirect rule, allowing local leaders some autonomy while maintaining ultimate control. This system incorporated the existing caste system and appointed Rajas who would govern under Dutch supervision.

Economic Exploitation: The Dutch focused on exploiting Bali's resources, particularly coffee production. This led to the introduction of forced cultivation practices that burdened the Balinese people.

Resistance and Change: Balinese society did not passively accept Dutch rule. There were rebellions and uprisings throughout the colonial period. However, Dutch control also brought changes like improved infrastructure and healthcare.

Republic of Indonesia (1945/49 - Present)

Following Indonesia's independence in 1949, Bali, including Klungkung, became part of the new republic:

Integration and Decentralization: Bali was initially incorporated as a province within Indonesia. Over time, Indonesia has adopted a more decentralized form of governance, granting greater autonomy to regions. Klungkung is now a regency within the province of Bali.

Preserving Traditions: Despite modernization, Bali has strived to preserve its unique cultural heritage. Klungkung remains a center for traditional arts and continues to attract tourists interested in experiencing Balinese culture.

Challenges and Opportunities: As part of Indonesia, Klungkung faces challenges like balancing tourism development with cultural preservation. However, opportunities exist for economic growth and improved living standards for its people.

The monument marks the struggle in 1908 between the dutch colonizers and the balinese which ended in the ceremonial puputan in klungkung. Puputan is an old Javanese/balinese loanword or term for mass ritual suicide in preference to facing the humiliation of surrender. On the 18th of april 1908 made a desperate sortie out of his Palace, situated cluse by the monument and clad in white and armed with a legendary kris supposed to wreak havoc on the enemy according to a prophecy. The kris failed to fulfill the desired outcome, and the Raja was instead shot by a Dutch bullet. Immediately, the six wives of the king resorted to puputan, killing themselves with their own kris, soon followed by the other Balinese in the procession. Inside the monument you can follow the history and other important event up to the present day. Well...

A really interesting and beautiful place the museum is also really interesting with lots I formations, but you have to be careful not to be scammed by just so-called local guides who are not included in the price of the Museum and who aske you the payment at the end without giving you information in the beginning, and insist on the same prices as the entry ticket
