This chinese praying place in Lasem is said to be the oldest temple in Java. Even though it had been plundered once, so that many historical records were lost, the caretaker of this temple found in the Netherlands an ancient map of Lasem from 1477 AD which shows the existence of the worship building. Other sources believe that this place is older, even back to the 14th century, when Majapahit Kingdom was still standing. Cu An Kiong was built by Chinese immigrants who landed in Lasem and chose settlements on the banks of the Babagan River. Inevitably this place of worship is placed facing north towards (originally) from the mouth of the Babagan River to the open sea. According to tradition, Admiral Zheng He once landed in front of the temple. Regardless of age, this place of worship has undergone several updates. The main building of the temple consists of a rectangular room, which is divided into two parts: the inner side and the front side. The most exalted part is located on the inside (south). This section is marked by a row of three altars, facing the confluence of the Babagan River with the open sea. The main altar is placed in the middle, to honor Tian Shang Sheng Mu (Thian Siang Sing Bo in Hokkien) or Ma Zu, who is also called Mak Co, as a venerable figure.
