Free to enter, less crowd during week days (recommended), I was lucky it was not too hot nor raining, full chinese music all around the area with great speakers, many restaurants or small stalls to buy food, snacks, drinks, there are stores to buy small merchandises but most are food and drinks, many spots for photo shoots, very recommended for old couples and family to visit. Took around 1 hour to 1.5 hour to eat and go around for photo shoots (quick mode). We tried Xiao La Guo restaurant, which has interesting big bowl for family sharing. It also has plus side which is very good spot for picture on 2nd floor with the iconic building and gate as the background. The taste was just okay, but after 1 hour our throats were kind of dry (maybe too much seasoning/msg). The jasmine tea was great, it could be refilled 3 times, total we got 6 cups of tea to enjoy. Back on the Old Shanghai review: The down side is that the sewer smells, you can smell it when taking off mask for photo shooting. The toilets are clean but need to work on the smells too (easier than the sewer problem ;) The management better fix on these problems for customer satisfaction. But overall, my family and I...
Read moreIt's similar to PIK's Pantjoran (some stalls from PIK can be found here too!). Quite big and some areas are half outdoor so not really hot during the day.
It can get a bit too crowded on weekends, but they have a designated area for parking (free!).
They have many trash cans available everywhere and also cleaners going around to pick up some trash. Some stalls can't accept cards, so prepare cash or QRIS payment. However, it'd be nice if they provide a full directory of the stalls on Instagram or google maps so we can plan ahead what to do there.
Some of the stuff I ordered and the ratings: Bakmie Kepiting Pontianak 8/10 - kepitingnya sedikit, but overall very tasty. Bakso Goreng 9/10 - so good and halal too Es Duren 9/10 - the almond topping enhances the flavor and the texture Korean Macaron 6/10 - too sweet but unique food Es Tebu 8/10 - very fresh but a bit too expensive Nasi Goreng Gila Kerang 8.5/10 - tasty, big portion Hoy Tod (Seafood omelet) 9/10 - very tasty but i prefer the squid instead of oyster. can be very crowded on weekends. Read moreOld Shanghai is the newest trend in Kelapa Gading, courtesy of Agung Sedayu. Located behind RS Gading Pluit, it is easy enough to find: take the new-ish flyover before the hospital and then follow the road all the way until you see the giant Pagoda.
Parking was surprisingly difficult on a Thursday afternoon. I thought it would be fairly empty but I guess it's school summer holiday so plenty of crowd around. As soon as I walked in, I felt immediately like in Pantjoran PIK.. It's the almost exact replicate except newer and a bit smaller? Some if not most of the stalls are also the same as PIK with lots of crowd-pleasing pork dishes.
We tried several items from oyster omelette to mie goreng kangkung blacan and also sate babi manis (from Iga Bakar Ajung). Washed them down with liang teh and ice coffee (from Kopi Tek Kie), plenty of other drinks vendor available to choose from. Overall good eating experience, will come back to try Mutiara Chinese Resto and Nasi Lemak.
Be warned if you visit during the weekends and during the day, it will be hot and packed....
