Government owned museum located at the foot of Mount Merapi that depicts the mountain's history.
Easy access to go here if you just follow your map application. Definitely won't miss it since it is very huge with a high triangular roof. Parking lot is super wide, enough for big buses too (they charge you for parking, unfortunately). A good venue for school or even company visit.
Ticket is super affordable (5k) but I hope they can raise the fee for maintenance since some of the sections are closed due to roof leaking. Even some of the roof tiles are slipping (maybe this caused the leaking!). Some sections are poorly lit so a bit hard to read the information especially on the second floor.
Education wise, it is the best place to learn about Mount Merapi's history especially after the deathly eruption back in 2010. I suggest buying the ticket for the cinema as well (5k) to learn more. The museum depicts the Merapi from its latest eruption with some exhibition of ruined things that belongs to the local villages. Then you can see the exhibition that tells more about its previous eruptions dates back to before the country's independence. Other sections depict the Ring of Fire around the world, local legend about Merapi & Yogyakarta, tools used to study the mountain from past and many interactive displays that will attract kids. The spinning globe is a must see, the huge Merapi replica at the lobby is the best photo spot. During weekends, they have in house gamelan & sinden singer that will accompany during the visit.
A must see is the movie. Come at least 10 minutes before the time starts to ensure good sitting. Since they keep selling the cinema ticket even though it's full house. The cinema is on the second floor, has cozy sitting for around 100 people & large screen. Unfortunately, the movie is very poor audio wise. It still explains about Merapi very well, though.
Tips: Avoid crowd, don't come during long weekend or holiday season. If you do, come early. A good place to chill after being under the sun in other tourists attractions. Buy the cinema ticket & be early to arrive...
Read moreMerapi Volcano Museum is a great exposition of the importance and the impact of Mt. Merapi to Yogyakarta! It has all the interactive modules and rooms that will provide you the right and essential information to understand how Yogyakarta, and Indonesia, responds and treats disasters.
From videos, to sculptures, and eveb mythologies, the museum offers it all. Perhaps my most favorite part is the central model in the lobby of the mountain itself. The rock samples were also fascinating. To make the experience more impactful, get a tour guide and if you are lucky, get a geologist friend who speaks the language.
Unfortunately, parts of the museum show disrepair. Mold has creeped into the fiberboard ceiling and some part have decated already. They also need to update their toilets. Although they have a souvenir shop, it is better if it can have its own store so it is more noticeable. I really hope they have future plans to renovate and modernise the facility! We don't want another eruption for them to revive their drive for risk education and...
