Glendalough Lower Lake is truly one of the most magical places I’ve visited in Ireland. Nestled within the Wicklow Mountains National Park, this serene lake offers an unforgettable escape from the hustle of daily life. The moment you arrive, you’re greeted by the fresh mountain air, the calming sound of water, and views that look like they’ve been lifted straight from a postcard.
The walking trails around the Lower Lake are incredibly well-maintained and suitable for all fitness levels. I followed the lakeside path which loops around the water, and it was peaceful and scenic throughout. You’ll pass through shaded forests, open clearings, and gentle hills, all while being treated to stunning views of the surrounding cliffs and the glimmering lake surface. There are also plenty of benches and picnic spots if you just want to sit and soak in the atmosphere.
What stood out most to me was how tranquil and untouched the area felt. Despite being a popular destination, it never felt overcrowded. Everyone around seemed to share a quiet respect for the environment. The sound of birds, the occasional ripple in the water, and the towering trees made it feel like a natural sanctuary.
The facilities near the visitor centre were clean and accessible. There’s ample parking (although it fills up quickly on weekends), and toilets are available near the entrance. The signage is helpful, and if you’re new to the area, the visitor centre staff are kind and informative.
If you have more time, you can continue your walk toward the Upper Lake or explore the nearby monastic city ruins — but even if you just stop at the Lower Lake, it’s well worth the visit.
This spot is ideal for nature lovers, photography enthusiasts, or anyone simply looking to recharge. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and most importantly — take your time. It’s not a place to rush through. I’d recommend going early in the morning or near sunset for the most peaceful experience and magical lighting.
Whether you’re a local or a visitor to Ireland, Glendalough Lower Lake should absolutely be on your list. It’s a quiet reminder of the beauty that still exists...
Read moreIt was my first time visit to Lower Lake, so didn’t know what to expect. However, it didn’t disappoint me. If you are coming here by car then don’t worry, they have ample car parking space available, €5 per car (Correct as at 13 April 2024). There is a brilliant hiking trail on both sides of the lake, so you can park your car and enjoy walking/hiking around the lake. There is a spot where you can even touch lake water. It’s easy to slip over there, since the stones on the shores are too slippery. So better be careful. If you love nature then this is the place to be for you specially if you need to escape the hustle and...
Read moreI love places like this. A lake in the mountains and a forest. It's beautiful! I definitely recommend visiting this entire complex!
• The Lower Lake was at the heart of the monastic complex founded by St Kevin in the 6th century, and was likely used by the monks for practical purposes: water supply, fishing, or even rituals such as baptism. • Its proximity to the cathedral, tower, and church of St Kevin made the lake an important part of the community's daily life. • The marshy areas around the lake may have provided a natural defence against raids, making access to the...
