The is no doubting the fact that this bridge is an imposing feature on the approach into the city of Waterford.

It is a nine-span concrete road bridge over the river Suir. It was constructed in stages between 1982 and 1986, with an official opening of the first two lanes in 1984. It features lifting spans and there is a single-store flat-roofed control tower located towards the west end of the structure.

It is named after Edmund Ignatius Rice (and occasionally also called the Edmund Rice Bridge or Brother Edmund Ignatius Rice Bridge). The Rice Bridge was constructed after the previous bridge was deemed unsafe.
