A fine Georgian Cathedral which is sited on a place of Christian worship for almost 1,000 years. Construction of this present building began in 1773 and completed by the same John Roberts who designed the Roman Catholic Cathedral in 1779. This gives Waterford the unique distinction of being the only city in Europe where the protestant and catholic cathedral’s were conceived by the same man. It is an active place of worship today and is a parish church.

This Cathedral is noted to be a very historic building..Of historic note about this site was where Strongbow tied the knot with Aoife in 1170..the current Cathedral was completed in 1779 and standing inside and outside this beautiful structure is a very special heartfelt experience…it has been mentioned that it may be the finest 18th Century building in Ireland…I spent 1&1/2 hours viewing the many aspects of the Cathedral…

A welcoming people, will make you feel right at home. It brought me inner peace to spend the Sunday morning there. The dean is an amazing woman, sharing the message through simplicity than extravagance. The church in itself is built over an earlier site. It is beautiful and relaxing on the inside- ornately done ceiling, stained glass window, Waterford crystal chandeliers.

We were able to walk in freely in the afternoon and take a walk around. There's some interesting history here, accompanied by helping staff member who will give you additional information. If you just want to see the architecture, your visit likely won't take more than a few minutes. I did appreciate that the staff members did not attempt to solicit donations.

Waterford has two Cathedrals and both were designed by John Roberts. The Georgians were ruthless in destroying older buildings to build their own style. They dropped bits of masonry from the roof to persuade the bishop to destroy the Gothic cathedral that once stood here. Whether this was a good swap or not is a matter of opinion so no 5 stars!

A beautiful church built on the site an an even older church. This historic site is where the famous English knight Strongbow married Irish Princess Aoife way back in 1170. When this church was built, very old medieval vestments were discovered buried under the previous church for hundreds of years. Very much worth a look. It's free.
