The entrance is pricey (14€) but this is one of the most beautiful and well maintained medieval castles I've ever seen, and I've seen hundreds! You can buy a cumulative ticket with Isola Bella and Isola Madre (35€), but not with Isola Bella alone. Inside, we found a contemporary art exhibition ("Oltre il buio", 2023) which was, as usual with this kind of "art", not enticing; it didn't help that the alarm system was ridiculously oversensitive to proximity. Additionally, the castle hosts an expansive (and creepy!) doll collection, which includes some curious 19th c. automatas, sadly not actionable. The direction of visit wasn't clear, and if you start from the contemporary exhibition you will continue into the doll museum in the wrong direction. You're supposed to enter the doll collection from the ground floor courtyard I believe. Of particular note are the castle's rooms, which are very well preserved, with some impressive late medieval frescos and some (not particularly important) 17th-19th c. paintings. The view from the top is amazing, with Lago Maggiore and the mountains around. Finally, the garden is incredibly picturesque! There's also an nice bar, inexplicably locked behind the ticket entrance (they really should open it for non-visitors).

Tickets cost 15 euro per person. The Castle is beautiful, however, one wing was closed (Scaligera, August 2024) and the only exhibition was about dolls of various ages and toys, which for me was not so interesting. Inside the museum was hot and it was a bit smelly. The reason for the 4 stars is because you can actually climb to the top of the Castle tower, even if there's no sign or any direction whatsoever. We found our way up to the tower, passing through the Room of Justice, that has a wooden staircase that gets you up to the mezzanine, and from there there's the tower entry where you can climb even further to the top. The view is amazing from up there, and on hot days, there's a pleasant breeze that cools you. The bar has overpriced drinks, one bottle of water (0.5L) 2.5€.

Large, well preserved medieval fortification in a fantastic position overlooking lower eastern side of Lake Maggiore. Houses a Huge collection of dolls and toys from all over the world, but especially French, Italian and German 18th and 19th century which is very impressive...some bits fascinating, but almost too much in one go. In addition there are the castle rooms with painted wall frescos and some artworks and furnishings. The tower (up steps) offers spectacular views of the Lake and surroundings. There is also a contempory art exhibition and lovely cafe area for a reasonably priced drink and snack. 10 euro entry and parking on site. Allow 2_3 hours. Also worth a visit to the Angera lakeside area close by for a pleasant stroll.

The Borromeo Family it would seem are the equivalent of the National Trust for Lake Maggiore. This is another of their historic sites, and again, it is one that visitors to the area should not miss. The castle's elevated position gives excellent views of the Lake and of Stressa. The comparatively small garden is beautifully planted. Within the castle, there are interesting architectural features. The building contains several rooms devoted to dolls and toys. In addition, several rooms are devoted to antique animatronics. Videos show many of them operating. The café serves excellent coffee and cake in a lovely location. There is also a small gift shop.

Interesting castle, apparently the oldest conserved castle of Europe. There's a remarkable collection of dolls, that tells the story of doll toys over the centuries. Too much of that to my taste, but if you're into it then this is the place to be for you. There's also a giant wine press that goes back for centuries. The architecture is not that bad considering the age. The price was 12 euro for adults and 8,50 for children and I found that a little bit high.

Molto consigliato.
