Lago di Barcis — Attraction in Barcis

Absolutely stunning glacier formed lake located just 40 minutes North of Aviano Air Base. Barcis sits in a valley surrounded by the Friulian Dolomites which in themselves should be listed as one of the wonders of the world. Barcis is manged by and part of the Italian National Park Reserve known as "Riserva Naturale Forra del Cellina" . While frigid cold during the winter months, the warm opens the area to spectacular hiking opportunities, with many of the trails near the lake on fairly level ground and suitable for day hikers and families. The More adventurous can enjoy Kayaking, canoeing, sailing, speedboat racing, mountain biking, and paragliding. Scuba is an option, although it may require your own equipment and hiring a local guide. Campgrounds are available, but the sites are few and full most of the time. Here is a small store and restaurant ( Osteria Ponte Antoi ) near the park entrance, and the small village of Barcis is adjacent to the lake. After leaving Aviano take the mountain highway toward Montereale Valcellina, expect plenty of doublebacks especially on the initial climb up the mountains out of Aviano. There are several confusing and poorly marked turns that need to be made in one of the villages near the lake, so a GPS would be highly recommended. Overall this site a truly a gem, and one that Aviano dwellers or general visitors absolutely...

Today was my second visit to Lake Barcis. Last year we approached from Dardago via SP29, but this time we were leaving from Aviano and the route the GPS gave us took us the back way around the mountains...the drive was one narrow switch-back after another and a nail-biting drive for sure... but oh so beautiful. Once we got to the lake we were trying to figure out how to get to the other side and finally found what we all thought was a foot bridge because it was so narrow. But another car carefully ventured across and we followed his lead once he was on the other side.

There is only one word to describe this place...BREATHTAKING!!! If there is a slice of heaven on earth this is it in my humble opinion. The park areas are all super clean, with bathrooms and potable running water, swings, sliding boards, and small inflatable boat rentals. No swimming, or animals are allowed but I did see a small dog at one of the RV's that was parked in the campground area. There is a huge resident swan that rules over the water in a regal manner...last year I was here in April and she was pretty aggressive with anyone who walked out onto the docks. I finally saw that babies (cygnets) were tucked away in a nearby cove.

My husband will be joining me next week and I plan to make another trip with him to Lake Barcis as I know he will love it as...

Il Lago di Barcis, incastonato nelle Dolomiti Friulane, è un autentico gioiello naturale che offre paesaggi mozzafiato e una tranquillità unica. Il lago è ideale anche per chi ama le attività all'aperto. Le sue acque limpide sono perfette per il kayak, il windsurf, la vela o persino per una tranquilla gita in pedalò. Gli amanti del trekking e delle mountain bike troveranno numerosi sentieri che si diramano attorno al lago, tra cui percorsi che conducono a punti panoramici incredibili, da cui si può ammirare l’intero bacino e le montagne circostanti.

Un altro elemento che rende speciale il Lago di Barcis è la sua vicinanza al Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti Friulane, una riserva naturale protetta che offre un'ampia varietà di flora e fauna, oltre a paesaggi incontaminati. Per chi desidera esplorare la natura in modo più approfondito, il parco è una tappa obbligata.

Infine, il paesino di Barcis, affacciato sul lago, è una piccola gemma in sé, con le sue case caratteristiche e la calorosa accoglienza dei suoi abitanti. Qui è possibile trovare ristoranti tipici dove gustare piatti locali del Friuli Venezia Giulia, completando così un'esperienza immersiva sia dal punto di vista naturalistico che gastronomico.
