Caccamo's Castle — Attraction in Caccamo

Disappointing experience at this massive castle in a spectacular geographical location. While the setting is impressive, the current state of the castle is truly sad. The structure appears neglected and poorly maintained despite its historical significance.

The museum inside is particularly disappointing - dusty exhibits with no coherent concept or historical narrative to guide visitors. There's a complete lack of informative displays or storytelling that would help visitors understand the castle's importance and history.

I understand that renovation costs for such an enormous structure would be substantial, but the current visitor experience feels like a missed opportunity at best and misleading at worst. The entrance fee doesn't match the quality of what's offered.

This castle has enormous potential given its dramatic setting, but currently falls far short of providing a worthwhile visitor experience. Needs serious investment and a complete rethinking of how the site is presented...

Some reviews say that it is not worth it... that is not true at all. Yes, I agree that there is not a ton to see inside... but it is gorgeous. Yes it needs probably some fixing up however you only pay 6 euros... not many people take the hike up there ... so not sure the funds are there to keep up with all the maintenance. But anyway.... try to come right before dark so you can see it during the day and during the night..... I enjoyed every moment in there. We came while raining so the views were limited but still beautiful. The town is lovely and people are very friendly. Just come to the castle don't read the reviews from the grumpy people that are never satisfied...

Costruito nel 1094, inizialmente come Torre Mastra, con sottostante cisterna d’acqua, venne successivamente ampliata con cinta muraria per dare rifugio ai mercanti del tempo. Dal 1392 Il Castello, divenuto di proprietà della nobile famiglia dei Chiaromonte venne ulteriormente ampliato e fortificato. Nel quattordicesimo secolo, al suo massimo splendore, Giovanni Alfonso Henriquez, Viceré di Sicilia, migliorò il castello fornendo a Caccamo il suo stemma tutt'ora in uso. Nel sedicesimo secolo il maniero passo alla famiglia Amato, baroni di Caccamo, per poi succedergli la famiglia De Spuches, principi di Galati e duchi di Caccamo. Dal 1963 è di proprietà della regione Sicilia. Si racconta che il fantasma di una giovane monaca vaghi nello stesso luogo, figlia di uno dei signori del castello innamorata di un uomo, disapprovato dal padre. Per quanto ricambiato, questo amore non era destinato a diventare realtà, avendo il padre ordinato l’omicidio dell’uomo e la monacazione forzata della figlia. La giovane morì in convento per la disperazione subito dopo l’assassinio del suo amante. Nelle notti di luna piena il fantasma della monaca si aggira per il Castello di Caccamo, stringendo in mano un melograno, secondo il mito popolare, chiunque riuscirà a mangiare tutti i chicchi del frutto, senza toccarli con le mani e senza farne cadere nessuno, troverà un’immensa fortuna. In caso contrario, però, quest’ultimo sarà destinato a vagare per l’eternità insieme alla suora. Bellissimo luogo con una storia affascinante.
