Very friendly receptionist. Eight Euros, but lots of detailed information about the history of the entire area and the castle itself. The views were spectacular. The dungeon realistic. The videos were detailed and clear about the Inquisition and different law codes during the Middle Ages. It was so steep, that I got dizzy looking down the walls. Lots of children playing in the streets and plaza and alleys. Typical narrow streets with restaurants tucked into every corner. A surprising number of free public parking places just outside the castle walls. The road up to this castle from Ponsacco was six kilometers long, curvy and narrow and beautiful at every turn. The personal tour could take half-a-day if a person read everything offered on all the walls and the brochures. A gold mine of information on the history of the area, as it all affected the castle in Lari. After that visit, we returned to our favorite restaurant, Il Rosso della Paola, halfway...

Amazing town castle with a fabulous pasta making experience. This is by far one of the best tourist experiences I’ve had the pleasure of attending with my young family. The drive to the village is challenging with bends, chicanes and steep narrow passes. Beware as you drive the natural beauty of the landscape, seriously idillic property and vantage points are distracting! It’s best to wait for this castle on the top of the hill. Take a deep breath! It gives you an outrageous panoramic view of Tuscan green and terracotta roofs. The village below is exceptionally well kept with quality deli’s and bars. Perfect and relaxed.

Parto dalle lamentele: ● oggi, 26 dicembre, i sotterranei erano chiusi (come,pare, siano da un po'di tempo) a causa di infiltrazioni. On line ciò non è indicato. Sarebbe corretto, invece, dar alla gente la possibilità di scegliere se venire e vedere 2/3 di percorso oppure rimandare la visita a quando saranno nuovamente agibili. Visto che si tratta di una probabile tomba Etrusca riadattata ad utilità del castello nei secolo, non mi sembra una piccolezza. ● On line l'unica indicazione è che le visite senza guida inizino alle 15,30...non specificano che fino alle 16,00 nessuno apre i percorsi multimediali interni e le prigioni...si scopre tutto una volta sul posto. Le storie dei detenuti che ho visto approfondire, sono quelle di processi interessanti, del '600 e '700. La storia più recente di Giovanni detto il Rosso di Paola, non mi pare venga citata affatto. (Ammetto di aver saltato la lettura dei pannelli dell'ultima stanza delle prigioni..non possodire se sia o meno raccontata lì, ma ad una scorsa non ho visto il nome (Non so se la guida"umana"ne parli o meno). La leggenda del suo fantasma è opinabile, si, ma resta il fatto che pare fosse un oppositore al Regime che nel 1922 lì venne ucciso...anche questo sarebbe da valorizzare. Note positive: suggestivi il camminamento ad anello (io ho beccato l'ora del tramonto) e la storia di alcuni detenuti accennata in alcuni loro graffiti su intonaco. Per chi ha tempo sarebbe curioso scoprire le casate di appartenenza di tutti gli stemmi...
