There is a lot of hype around Montelifioare on many blogs, that’s why we decided to go here while in Greve. There were many things underwhelming/ frustrating at this place, right from completely being unable to find the location to rude lady who runs the shop. We followed instructions on their website and still couldn’t locate. Google maps location is wrong too. The roads entering here from Greve are super narrow and rugged. Despite leaving with buffer time for our appointment, we arrived 1+ hr late getting lost multiple times.
The most underwhelming thing is rather than being some grand winery like it’s advertised, it’s a small thatch with a lady running operations from her kitchen. The “wine tour” is just her walking us into the kitchen, showing wine barrels and ends in 5 minutes. After that she gives 5 wine samples but staggers them extremely slowly so that we are stuck 1.5 hrs sampling it. If you like sweet wine, the vin santo at the end is good, so we bought a bottle.
What was very frustrating was how rude the lady was. While she accommodated us despite being late, when I let her know that we got lost she condescendingly told “you are the only one who gets lost, everyone else makes it on time so don’t blame the directions, it’s your fault”. While that is very rude it’s also not true as we found few other tourists equally lost too, trying to find winery earlier.
Overall a very underwhelming experience and I’d recommend to spend your precious limited time in Tuscany elshwere. The town looked pretty due to the castle, but that’s not part...
Read moreWe were really looking forward to a great afternoon with great weather enjoying great wine in the Tuscan sun looking up at the village of Montefioralle. The experience fell FAR short of our aspirations. Our hostess, the daughter in law of the winery's founder, was disinterested and seemingly annoyed that the other party that reserved the same time did not show up. She was less than friendly, and though she took us on a tour of the small winery, her spiel was robotic, monotone, and hurried. There were four tables that seated 8 people each on the patio. There were 4 people in our party, leaving seating for 28 other people. When we had completed the tasting and asked if we may buy a couple bottles and sit and drink them, we were told that wasn't possible because they had another tasting to complete. We saw that there was a small sitting area adjacent to the patio, and asked if we might be able to sit there and enjoy our wine and were told, "we don't normally do that, but I guess it would be fine". No effort was made to provide glasses or even help open the wine we had purchased, so we just quietly left. It's really a shame because the area is beautiful and the wine was good but the customer service is very poor and she made us feel like an unwelcome...
Read moreWe were so looking forward to this wine tasting and visit. We have visited many wine cellers in several countries and this is the only time that we felt the lack of interest from the person providing the tour. In 15mins the young lady managed to quicly explain everything about the bodega and wines. We then went inside, sat at a table and were given a small plate of different bites´. No explanation as to what it was but frankly we noticed a line of plates sat on the kitchen table on arrival and it was inedible. We sampled 3 different chianti classic wines plus a vin sant (sweet wine). Sadly the lady poured the wine, explained how it would be better in a few years`and disappeared downstairs to chat to her husband whilst we sipped the wine. Below average wines. Very below average interest. Very poor and disappointing and frustrating experience. Certainly would not recommend. We almost got up and left after the 2nd wine but felt that would be rude so we...
