What a delightful castle! A lot of fun photo opportunities and a very well laid out touring program. Kids will enjoy. No parking near and it is not easily accessible for the handicapped. There is a nice walking path with beautiful artwork along the way. Pieces are authentic and explanations along the way tell you the the history of the castle. We visited here on a weekend afternoon and it was not crowded at all. This was such an interesting place to visit and really cool to learn about the family whose name the town bears. Un post meraviglioso con una storia molto interessante.Il Castello di Monguelfo o Welsperg è il complesso fortificato più antico tra Brunico e Lienz e si trova a pochi minuti a piedi dalla località di Monguelfo, in cima ad una collina soleggiata. Il castello fu fatto costruire nel 1140 dai fratelli Schwikher e Otto von Welsperg. La signoria Von Welsperg fu una stirpe nobiliare potente ed influente, soprattutto con il Barone Guidobold Von Welsberg, che ricevette il titolo di conte da Leopoldo I. Dal Castello di Monguelfo i Signori Von Welsperg amministravano un ampio feudo. Per quanto riguarda il castello invece, il maschio antico e molto alto risale agli anni 1126-1140 ed è senza dubbio la parte più antica del castello – era perfetto per vedere in lontananza e osservare bene il territorio circostante. Solo poco tempo dopo furono costruiti la piccola cappella romanica, un fabbricato per la servitù e il palazzo. Tra il XV e il XVI secolo l'intero complesso fu ristrutturato e ampliato più volte.
