Recently I brought a group of 12 Americans to Piemonte and we took over the lodgings at Marchesi Alfieri. I can't say enough wonderful things about the warm, attentive, and highly professional (without being stuffy) attention we received during our seven nights there. ||||The breakfast is delicious. S. Martino Alfieri native Giuseppina (Giusi) prepares lovely buffet tables of cheeses, meats, fruits, bread, sweets, and the like. She stands ready to prepare eggs in whichever manner you like (provided you can communicate in Italian or be descriptive). There are pitchers of fresh-squeezed orange juice that she prepares as well. Want a cappuccino? She'll happily make you one that will make you smile. The cups are a little small, so ask her for a "grande tazza." ||||Isella is in charge of hospitality and is also a sommelier. So you will certainly enjoy a tour and tasting of the estate's beautiful wines with her or Irene. Don't miss the beautiful gardens! ||||The bed linens and pillows are comfy and the rooms simply, but well appointed. Some rooms have a parlor between them, so those are great for families or two couples traveling together.|| ||Like to get in a morning hike in the Monferrato countryside before a day of dining and sipping? Isella or Irene can point you to some lovely walks on the estate's grounds and beyond its boundaries. ||||Marchesi Alfieri is located at a spot where the Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato wine regions come together to the east of Barbaresco and Barolo. It is a perfect spot to enjoy wineries and restaurants in all three areas. It is located just up from the A33 which makes it quick and easy to get to Alba and Barolo. Canale is easily reached through back roads.||||And don't miss the nougat shop in nearby S. Damiano! The ladies of Marchesi Alfieri will point you in the right direction for that treat! ||||NOTE: In addition to the seven rooms in La Locanda, there is a house with a separate gated entrance below the castle. It was once the gardener's home. La Margherita has 3 large bedrooms (including one with a quirky bathroom on the floor above it, but with private access) plus one small single room. Each has private bathroom. One of the three large bedrooms is located on the ground floor and has a handicapped access shower. There is also a kitchen, large sitting room, dining room, and sunrooms plus garden seating. The entire house can be rented (with daily cleaning of rooms) and is great for groups or families....
