Truffle in Tuscany — Attraction in San Miniato

I had an amazing time truffle hunting with Massimo and Bice (Massimo’s truffle hunting dog) this is truly a once in a lifetime experience. I went on the truffling and home lunch tour. Massimo customizes his tours based on each guest, and really makes them feel like they’re apart of his family.

Massimo has education and preservation at the forefront of his tours. He’s dedicated to teaching each of his guests where real truffles come from. He wants his guests to see, smell, and taste true white and black truffles. Not to mention he was one of the first truffle hunters to start this type of experience in Tuscany!

During our hunt Bice found many truffles. We were specially hunting the spring white truffle - something Massimo noted was key to not only finding the most potent and ripe truffles of the season but also to preserve the still growing truffles for hunting in other seasons. Massimo prides himself on the preservation of the natural habitat of the truffle and to carrying on his family legacy of this skill.

Massimo comes from generations of truffle hunters in San Miniato, so you can trust he knows his stuff! On top of all this, he took me hunting on a private estate with stunning panoramic views of the historic town center of San Miniato. Okay, picturesque!

We not only found truffles but harvested wild white asparagus while in the estate’s forrest. We even used these in the lunch his father prepared for me after our hunt.

The lunch experience was equally as special as the hunting tour. Salvatore, Massimo’s father prepared lunch for me in the cozy guest house on the families property. The lunch Salvatore made rivals any Michelin star experience. Everything was seasonal, fresh and of course fresh truffle was shaved over top of each dish!

I couldn’t recommend a tour with Truffle in Tuscany more. 10/10 experience. Massimo made sure to make me feel like I was welcome back to visit my truffle family any time.

Perhaps one of our favorite experiences on our recent trip to Italy was truffle hunting with Massimo and his sweet dog, Geo. We were warmly greeted by Massimo and his father at their villa in San Miniato. We toured their garden, tasting fresh apricots and plums straight from the trees. Then we made a quick drive to a shady forest area where Massimo (and Geo!) continued to teach us about truffles, how and where they grow, how he connects with and trains his dogs to truffle hunt, how they mark and preserve the forest floor, and much more. Generations of his family have hunted truffles, and therefore he is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does! . After our hunt we headed back to the villa where we were welcomed by Massimo’s sister, Letizia for a truffle-topped meal. She continued to teach us about the proper preparation of truffles, how to store them, the best food and drink accompaniments, etc. She made us a fabulous meal topped with fresh truffles, truffle cream, etc - what a treat! We had the absolute pleasure of going truffle hunting in Tuscany with Massimo and his wonderful dog Mela, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our honeymoon.

Massimo was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the land and the tradition of truffle hunting. He took the time to explain the history, the techniques, and even shared personal stories that made the experience feel so special. We ended up finding two black truffles!

After the hunt, we were welcomed into Massimo’s family home, where his sister Letizia prepared a phenomenal four-course meal, all made from scratch and incorporating the truffles we had just found. Every dish was delicious and thoughtfully prepared, and the local wines and prosecco paired perfectly.
