Really cool experience that is pretty difficult to get to. I grew up watching Godzilla movies so this was a must see for me and I set aside a day from Osaka to make the trip. If you’re in the area for the other amusement parks or a hardcore Godzilla fan then I definitely recommend this. Otherwise I would caution that it takes close to 2 hours each way from Osaka.
I could never find good instructions on how to get here so hopefully this helps out my fellow English speaking tourists. If traveling from Osaka you need to get to the Maiko station. It’s right on the other side of the huge bridge from Awaji island. There are many trains that come here so it should be easy to figure that out. From Maiko station just follow the signs for the Awaji island bus. You should eventually reach an elevator or escalator and you need to get to the 4th floor. This will take you to the actual bridge deck. The busses have a special stop on the bridge so they pull over to the side and you board. There should be someone working for the bus company at the bridge. He will help you get on the correct bus. There is a frequent bus that goes to the inter change across the bridge and a infrequent bus that goes to the Godzilla museum directly. It’s up to you but it is a solid 30 minute up hill walk from the interchange.
We took the interchange since otherwise it was an hour wait. From there follow signs for the highway oasis. The route is confusing but keep checking your location on google maps and lookout for road signs.
From the highway oasis you walk through a pretty garden area and eventually reach the Godzilla museum.
The museum is like a Disney ride. There is an intro video. Zip line. Shooting game. And then museum with models from the movies.
Also there is a neat gift shop and themed cafeteria with good food.
If this was easier to get to I would say this is a must see but as you can see it was tricky. To return we couldn’t even figure out the busses from the Godzilla museum and called a taxi so unfortunately you’d be on your...
Read moreCame here on a Sunday during a public holiday and had no issues getting tickets at the gate.
People have said it’s a mission to get here but I didn’t find that at all. Just get yourself to Akashi train station on the JR line take a shirt five minute walk to Akashi port, purchase yourself a 600 yen ferry ticket via the machine and it’s 15mins to Iaway port on Awaji island. From here we literally walked 100m to the bus depot where a free shuttle bus is offered to Nijigen No Mori. All up my trip talk 45 mins from Akashi station.
Akashi station and Awaji port both had information centres which gave me timetables for the ferry and the shuttle bus. It less touristy but everyone is super friendly and does their best to help.
Now to get to the Godzilla Museum. You start off with an introduction video explaining how Godzilla came to exist on the island where you are now and that you need to zipline into his mouth as a recon mission.
Then you zipline into the dormant enormous Godzillas mouth. Truly a fun and enjoyable moment. Once on the ground it’s to the battlefield where you equip yourself with guns and tally up your kills against friends. Time for a quick photo shoot and then to the museum packed with Godzilla memorabilia and history. Truly spectacular. From here you can head to the gift shop then the food hall where you can get Godzilla themed meals. Amazing!
Honestly I’m not the biggest die hard fan and I’d say this is worth it. I surprisingly had a lot of fun visiting and I didn’t think it was that difficult to get to, go on give it a...
Read moreNothing much was said about how to get to the Awaji Island and leaving it. We took a bus from the Sanomiya Bus Terminal. You can go to the info counter, they will show you which berth to get onto the bus. The bus will bring you to carpark F. This is where you need to get down on Awaji Island.
The zipline is pretty cool. But that's about it. The museum can be finished in less than half an hour. There is also a souvenir shop where you can purchase Godzilla merchandise.
You can finish the whole area in about 2 hours+.
The signs aren't clear at all on how to leave the island. We took the Hello Kitty themed bus. If you tell the driver that you're going to Maiko station, he will let u know which stop to alight. After alighting, you need to cross the bridge to get across the opposite road and walk through the tunnel halfway and go up the stairs. There will be a bus stop there where you can take a bus to Maiko station or Sanomiya Bus...
