I had the pleasure of staying in onokoro's small rental property for a night after a day of indigo dying. The owner, Mr. Negi really knows his stuff, and explained the whole concept of the studio. The whole process from start to finish is organic and based around a natural harvest and fermentation cycle of indigo. The workshop was fun, but I also learned a lot about the whole process and science behind dying indigo. The owner was previously working with denim and had an excellent knowledge of a lot of the industries that surround indigo. The "yado" rental room was a gorgeous little stand alone house, looking over indigo fields and the ocean. Negi was a terrific teacher and designer so that we were so happy with the scarves and t-shirt we dyed. The indigo is grown and processed on site so that you experience the living aspect of Indigo, rather than dye sprinkled from a package. It was a special, authentic and fun experience and the hosts were very welcoming and friendly, even though we can’t speak Japanese.
