Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center — Attraction in Beppu

You can read about the history of traditional Japanese bamboo crafts and some of the more influential artists and designers plying the trade. There are many beautiful displays of weaving techniques as well as finished products. There was a dark room where they had several displays of lamps with marbles used as glass reflectors which were impressive. On the second floor there was a big are set out for what seems to a class setting where you can learn how to make your own bamboo-ware. Wonderful little museum showcasing the varied and mind-blowing art of weaving with bamboo. I learned a lot (they have quite a bit of info in English) and was just so amazed by the creativity and skill behind the masters’ works. There’s also a cute little shop and café. I had a nice tea. Strolling around on a sunny day and stumbled into a magical creative oasis. It was a shame that pictures were not allowed to be taken of most things, however I saw some Japanese people taking pictures either way, so maybe it is not observed strictly. So many wonderful things that you can make with this material. I was really inspired. I really want to book a workshop now, and start growing...
