Tsurunoyu — Attraction in Beppu

The real outdoor onsen experience, FREE of charge! MIXED GENDER which means women and men have to share the same tubs being naked. Women might feel uncomfortable, when I visited we were only males. You need to bring your own shampoos and towel. Operating hours: always open, its in the wild, two minutes walk from the parking (there is no actual parking, you just reach the end of the road, use the roundabout and park on the side of the street). You can see your stuff while bathing, no lockers. You wash yourself before you enter using the onsen stream that flows out from the tub, you have to go on the edge of the tub. Hazy sulfuric water with particles, two small sized pools, one with hotter water. I have measured 42.5°C water temperature at the normal one and 44.6°C at the hotter one (closer to the source). There is a proper wooden hut (built by volunteers) where you can change your clothes and even have a private changing little room for women. There is NO toilet! The locals are really friendly and chatty. No light at night, if there is no moonlight bring a flashlight. There is a sign just before the onsen noting that a serious crime had been committed in the area, referring to a murder of a woman during the night NOT in this onsen but in one further up the trail, the culprit has been caught and thrown to jail and now is considered safe although I wouldn't go there as a woman alone at night. The locals have told me that a woman could bathe with a towel wrapped around her, another time when I went at night there was a woman bathing with her swimming suit on. Recommended! Gensen...

■2015年に訪問。別府三大秘湯を徒歩で巡ってみました。その1湯目がこちら。宿泊していた鉄輪の貸間（陽光荘）を朝スタート。鶴の湯までは3kmなので大した距離ではないのですが、標高差が270ｍあるので結構ハード。9月だったので汗だくで到着。7時半くらいだったかな。 ■木造前面オープンの休憩所兼脱衣所がありそこで着替えます。女性はドアの付いた脱衣所がありますよ。浴槽は床まで石造りのとてもきれいなものです。もちろん屋根などない完全露天。扇山（大平山）の緑が本当にきれい。 ■すでに地元の常連さんたちが4～5人、朝風呂を楽しんでおられました。ご挨拶して入湯。この時にいろいろとルールを教えて頂きました。このお風呂は川のようになっていて、上手に源泉口があり、そこから下手にお湯が流れています。まず下のほうでかけ湯をしてから湯船に入ります。このお湯が熱い！私も温泉好きなのでだいたいの湯温は肌でわかりますが、絶対45度以上ある。「今日はちょっとぬるめだよ」。温泉地の地元のおっちゃんって、だいたいいつもこう言いますね（笑） ■ちなみに私が入ったときは湯量がたくさんあったのですが、降水量などの関係で、年や季節によってはお湯が少ない時もあるそうです。 ■熱いからちょっと休憩しようと湯船の縁に腰かけたんですが、おっちゃんから「別府では縁に腰かけたらアカンのよ」とご指導。なんでも別府の共通マナーだそうで、共同湯などに入る時も覚えておくといいよ、とのこと。良いことを教えて頂きました。鶴の湯では、ところどころに作られた木の板の腰掛け場に座るようです。なるほど。 ■抜群の開放感の中で、同じ温泉好きのおっちゃんたちとはとても話が弾んだのですが、そろそろ次のヘビん湯に行かなければなりません。鶴の湯の横にある急斜面を登っていくと道に出るはずなんですが、これが鬼のような高さと角度。「これ登る人いるんですか？」「こないだ旅行で来てたアメリカ人が登っとったなぁ笑」「やっぱり来た道戻って明礬から行ったほうがいいですかね？1時間くらいロスするんですよねぇ」「ああ、それなら迂回路があってさ。ここから20ｍほど戻った右側の藪のところに入口があるんだけど、そこの道を進んだらこの崖の上に出られるんよ」と素晴らしい情報が。 ※今はGoogleマップで「鶴の湯→ヘビん湯」を検索すると、この道経由のルートが示されるんですが、当時は地図にすら載ってなかった道です。 ■おっちゃんたちにお礼を言って、教えてもらった道に入ると開けた場所に出ました。周囲は全面、山＆緑。素晴らしい景色です。6～7分歩いたら、崖の上の道に出ることができました。

というわけで、いろいろと貴重な体験をしたわけですが、ここが秘湯でありながらきれいに整備されているのは、ひとえに地元の利用者つまり有志の皆さんが常にメンテナンスなさっているからなんですよね。秘湯にして共同湯ですが、べつにここは市が作った施設ではありません。地元の人たちが作って管理しており、そこに我々がタダで入らせて頂いているんです。他のコメントを見ていると「地元の常連が自分こそルールであるかのようにふるまっている」との非難も見受けられますが、それこそ観光客の勘違いというもの。まさにここでは地元の常連さんこそがルールであってしかるべきなのです。他の共同湯以上に、我々観光客は「入らせて頂く」という謙虚な精神が大切だと思います。普通に温泉マナーを守って入れば嫌な思いなんてこれっぽっちもしないですよ。そう考えると入る者の温泉達人レベルが試される温泉、と...

What a beautiful place! The water is very hot. Everything is clean and tidy. When I arrived there one person was leaving, so I was alone until a couple of minutes later 2-3 other people arrived.
