The house itself had not much to see, however the museum next door had lot of concise information about Hirobumi’s success story. I wish there were more panels and explanations in English therefore the 4 star.

🏣山口県萩市大字椿東 🅿️🚗…有りました。 🚌...松陰神社前下車徒歩5分程 ※ 開館時間 9時～17時観覧料 100円 ※ 1885年初代内閣総理大臣となる。 ※ 伊藤博文旧宅は茅葺きの平屋建てで、総建坪、29坪、附属建物として便所.風呂場。居宅客室の広さは6畳一室、五畳半一室、四畳半一室、三畳三室、二畳一室、玄関土間でした。面積は393.39 ㎡。此の建物は萩藩の軽卒「伊藤直右衛門」の、居宅でしたが1854年に博文の父「十蔵」が伊藤宅に入家。その後、博文は17歳時、吉田松陰の門下生となって教育を受ける。志士としての活躍や英国への留学。此の家に安住する間もなく、 1868年兵庫県知事に赴任するまでは此方を本拠地とした。 ※ 国指定史跡貴重な建造物の見学が出来ました。

伊藤博文は本当に偉大なのか？、ワシには到底そうは思えん。西南戦争が過ぎ大久保利通の暗殺を最後に維新の大立者はすべていなくなってしまった。真っ当な者はほとんどが下野し政府には人材が残っていなかった。さあそれからは、残った小物たちが明治政府という名を借りて、私腹肥しの利権漁りと権力闘争を始める。そして役人のための政府を作ってゆくのである。見てみれば分かる、権力者は全国のあちこちに豪邸別荘を建てまくり、庶民からは想像もつかない生活を送るのである。ここもその一つだ。明治になっても人々は貧しく、娘を売って生活の糧にすることは江戸時代となんら変わってはいなかったのだ。そのような歴史の上に立って、この屋敷を見てみるのも一考だと思う。屋敷が立派であるほど物悲しくなってしまうのはワシだけだろうか。

One of my favorite visits in Hagi, lovely Japanese House from one of the former Prime ministers of Japan. Our guide of the day was absolutely great, we got so many small anecdotes about the place, and he even took a sweet picture of me and my friend in the place were Hirobumi used to sit. Information mainly in Japanese but it's worth it even if you understand...
