Cape Hinomisaki — Attraction in Izumo

⭐ Hinomisaki (日御碕) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hinomisaki is one of those places where Japan’s natural beauty and mythology come together perfectly. The rugged coastline with waves crashing against the rocks is breathtaking, especially at sunset when the sky and ocean light up in deep colors. The Hinomisaki Lighthouse, one of the tallest in Japan, offers panoramic views that are well worth the climb.

Nearby, the Hinomisaki Shrine stands quietly among pine trees, said to protect Japan through the night while Izumo Taisha protects during the day. It’s a unique pairing that gives the area a deeper cultural significance beyond just its beauty.

The atmosphere here is peaceful and less crowded than other famous spots in Izumo, which made the visit even more memorable.

must-go if you’re in izumo. weather was unstable during summer (my plan cancelled twice due to HEAVY rain, for 2 years), other than that, it’s absolutely beautiful! bus from taisha/JR station, clean washroom, parking, vending machines, restaurants and info centre, the big beautiful shrine and many tiny shrines nearby, lots of road signs and educational signboard - they even list the sunset time for you, for each season!!!! birds, sea, flowers, islands. even the road along is full of wows....

日御碕（ひのみさき）は、一畑電車 出雲大社前駅の北東9.7kmほどの島根県出雲市大社町日御碕の島根半島の西端にある日本海に面する岬です。

海岸線は浜あり灘あり、入り江や岬ありと変化に富み、波の浸食を受けた絶壁、地殻変動によって隆起した奇岩など、変化に富んだ海景色が広がり、大小の島が数多く散在している島根県を代表する景勝地です。 「大山隠岐国立公園」に指定され、地質学的に貴重な場所であることから「島根半島・宍道湖中海ジオパーク」にも認定されています。

火山岩の一種の流紋岩から構成される山が沈降して海に浸かり、波に侵食された後にわずかに隆起し「海食台」と呼ばれる地形が形成されました。周辺には柱状節理や洞穴が見られ、海上には小島や岩礁が点在します。 平安時代初期、出雲を訪れた宮廷画家の巨勢金岡（こせ の かなおか：802〜897年）が稲佐の浜から繋がる海岸線にある島の一つを描こうとしましたが、刻々と変化する様子を描き切れなかったという伝承があり「筆投島（ふでなげじま）」の名の由来となりました。 海底にはサドガセとボングイと呼ばれる岩があり、人工的に彫られた階段や参道、祭祀跡が確認されています。これは沖縄県の南城市にある世界遺産斎場御嶽に似ており、天照大神の神話によく似た神話が斎場御嶽に伝わっています。

岬の先端には、海抜日本一を誇る「出雲日御碕灯台」をはじめ、神話に登場する天照大御神（アマテラスオオミカミ）、素盞嗚尊（スサノオノミコト）の二柱を祀り、厄除けのご利益があり、朱塗りの権現造りで有名な国の重要文化財「日御碕神社」が鎮座しています。 サザエやワカメなど海産物の宝庫であり、...
