Kasugayama Castle Ruins — Attraction in Joetsu

While the castle itself may be a ruin, it doesn't detract from the awe and historical significance of this once great mountain fortress. To reach the honmaru, it is about a 10-15 hike, with some occasional steep areas. Signs in English are conveniently placed at significant spots up the trail which provide necessary context.

Kasugayama castle is fantastic on several fronts. It’s free to visit and all of the explanatory signage is also in English, so as a foreign visitor I didn’t miss out on anything. However although it is a historical site, the best thing about this place was, for me, the outstanding views from the top, especially as it was during cherry blossom season. 戦国武将の上杉謙信の居城で、日本100名城（No.32）、日本五大山城の一つとされている。（連郭式山城） 春日山神社駐車場（30台程度）または、その上のお土産屋さん近くの駐車場（謙信像の下で5台程度）まで車で行く事が出来ます。 春日山神社駐車場から春日山神社まで急な階段を登る必要がありますので、足に不安がある方は謙信像の下まで車で行かれる事をオススメします。

ゴールデンウィークやお盆休み中など時期により無料シャトルバスが通ってますので、春日山神社、林泉寺、ものがたり館へバスで行く事も出来ます。

オススメは、上越市埋蔵文化財センター（駐車50台程度）から大手道からの本丸へ向かうコースです。 整備された道を番所跡や南三の丸、カメワリ清水で小休憩をして、柿崎屋敷、景勝屋敷から天守台、本丸へ。 直江津から頸城（くびき）平野が一望出来ます！ 本丸から護摩堂、毘沙門堂、直江屋敷、御花畑、千貫門、春日山神社コースと二の丸、景虎屋敷、三の丸、春日山神社コースがあります。 春日山神社から御屋敷、林泉寺までも下りられる道もあります。

半日時間があったので、えちごトキめき鉄道春日山駅→埋蔵文化財センター→南三の丸→柿崎屋敷→景勝屋敷→天守閣、本丸→二の丸→三の丸→土の一袋運動で本丸へ→毘沙門堂→直江屋敷→千貫門→春日山神社→林泉寺→監物堀コースで上杉謙信目線を満喫してきました。 埋蔵文化財センターは休館日（100名城スタンプはゲット出来ました）、林泉寺はコロナ対策で入る事が出来ませんでした… また春日山城へ行く口実が出来ました！！

また、上越市主催の土の一袋運動をやっています。三の丸下の小屋に袋とスコップが置いてあり、近くのブルーシートの下の土を自分で一袋土を入れて本丸の木箱まで持って行くボランティアです。木箱に土を入れて、入れてきた袋は記念に持ち帰る事が出来ます。 ちなみに私は、2袋欲張って入れて来ました！
