Kitaro Nishida Memorial Museum of Philosophy — Attraction in Kahoku

Interesting exhibit, but information was mostly in Japanese. For ¥200 though it was very reasonable.

The building itself was deliberately constructed to accommodate reflection, meditation, and other forms of philosophical thinking. There are even conference rooms, classrooms, and a library open to public access—you can use them for studying and work.

You can grab a coffee and relax at the observatory—which has excellent views of the city and the surrounding countryside—or in the patios around the building, get lost admiring the architecture, or even just take a stroll around the trees. Very relaxing and meditative atmosphere for all seasons.

Absolutely amazing architecture. Went in not knowing who the philosopher was to feeling inspired. Great options for English speakers as well, you don’t feel lost at all. This building is intentionally designed similar to a maze or labyrinth to get to be more immersed and it certainly works. They even have the philosophers study, which was kept after the rest of the house ( donated a son of the founder of Mitsubishi!) was demolished. There is even a cafe and seminars that go on here, including a nice fruit sandwich as fruit was his favourite food. The free Wi-Fi however does not...

哲学者・西田幾多郎は京都学派の創始者であり、今は観光名所になっている京都の「哲学の道」でも知られています。 そんな経緯から京都ゆかりの学者というイメージが強いのですが、その出身地がここ石川県かほく市であること、そして学問を磨き上げ大成させる過程で多くの時間を過したのが、旧制四高をふくむ金沢であったことは、意外と知られていません。

今回この記念館を訪れて、まずその建物の規模、壮大さに度肝を抜かれました。哲学というとどうしても地味なイメージがあるのですが、それとはまったく別の、大博物館のような雰囲気です。 ただ館内を歩いていて、妙に長い動線とかが気になりました。あとで設計者を調べてみると、やはりあの方（安藤忠雄氏）だとわかり、納得。

内部の構成も結構凝っています。入ってすぐに、まず「哲学とは何か」を考えさせる第1展示室があります。 第2展示室は通常の、西田幾多郎の生涯とその業績を紹介するコーナー。人生において数々の試練に直面し、とても「悟りを開く」「俗世を超越する」といった哲学的なイメージとは程遠い西田の苦難の人生が語られます。 それに屈せず学問の道をひたすら進む西田の意志の力に改めて感銘をおぼえるところ。 第3展示室では西田の書を鑑賞した後、「空の窓」という、三方をコンクリートの壁に囲まれ空の見える空間に出て展示は終わります。まさに哲学的なエンディングです。

この展示内容をどう受け止めるかは、人それぞれでしょう。ただ早い時間だったせいか、あるいは立地の影響もあるのか、夏休み中の週末にもかかわらず来館者がほとんどいなかったのはちょっと残念でした。
