Hidden among the quiet hills of Katano, Hoshida Myoken-gu is not just a shrine — it’s a place where stars once fell, and silence still remembers.

Climbing the stone steps, I felt as if I were walking into an ancient story. No crowds. No noise. Just the rustling of trees and the deep breath of the mountain. At the heart of it all lies the Yogo-seki, a sacred rock said to have received the fallen stars. Standing before it, I didn’t need to believe in legends — I could feel them.

The air carried a weight of reverence, as if every breeze whispered memories from centuries past. And when I reached the summit, the view unfolded like a blessing: the forest below, the sky above, and in between — peace.

Hoshida Myoken-gu is more than a destination. It’s a prayer shaped in stone. A quiet light where the heavens once...

An incredibly underrated shrine. This Shinto shrine is also syncretic with Shingon Buddhism, enshrining a meteor as well as the stars in the Big Dipper constellation. and being believed to be the place where Kōbō Daishi performed the morning star meditation. Their Goshuin are also some of the most stunning pieces of art I have ever seen! If you get the chance to...
