"Five Colored Marshes" is the one of the most beautiful lakes in Japan. If you have any chance to visit Aizu and Lake Inawashiro area, don't miss to enjoy less one hour trail.. You mus be surprised to see 30 of different vivid colored small ponds/lakes. Suggest to visit sunny day, the blue sky is the best combination of this picturesque ponds/lakes. Enjoy start walking either Ura-Bandai bus stop or Goshikinuma bus stop then return way is using bus (5 min. drive). Please check the bus time table for planning to visit. Additionally, Urabandai Lake Resort Hotel offer a day spa which over looking Lake Hibara. No doubt, you will have unforgettable trip.

You can park and walk from either end of the trail. We parked on the western side, by the Urabandai Products Center Souvenir Store and Yanaginuma Pond. Due to time constraints, we only walked to Bentennuma Pond and then turned around. The Aonuma pond was especially beautiful. It reminded us a little of Shirogane Blue Pond up in Hokkaido. Everything was beautiful on the rainy day we went, but I would love to see the ponds on a sunny day as well. Sadly the clouds and fog blocked out a lot of the view of surrounding mountains, which was also a bummer. Still beautiful in its own way, though. The pictures don’t do it justice.

A great walk on a sunny weekday, easy access from the free parking lot on either end. We hiked one way and took the bus back to the trail head for ¥250. We ate a delicious lunch at the west entrance, highly recommend the Aizu sauce katzu cutlet Our 9 year old daughters did the hike without difficulty. Lovely boardwalks protecting the marsh lands and gave perfect photo platforms. Beautiful temperature compared to the valley. 100% recommend it for families or really anyone. The visitor center at the other end of the trail was great, but not a lot of English interpretation. Clean bathroom!

I went in winters, January start - it was snow everywhere. The autumn colors were obviously not seen. I saw something different. The place is totally a hidden trek during this time, no one to be seen around and the bus timings are with long gaps. Just look at the view - Photos are not black and white. I saw the bear sign late and nobody was there and the heavy snow was falling from the trees, it made me ache. Follow here in autumn season for the fun. Wil be going back again, it was beautiful with the frozen lakes too.

Absolutely stunning hiking trail in winter. The snow makes the area stunning. And walking through the snow with snow boots(needs rental of wide racket like shoes) is great. Doing the entire trail is better than returning after slight ventures into either end. Snow is deep in winter and boots/guide is mandatory. We did it without a guide. Check beforehand if the visitor centre is open or not. We had to rent from a far away shop. Taxis can be booked from the nearby kankou centre.

It’s a bit like Jiuzhaigou. The hike is pleasant with a few scenic lookouts and several different ponds to admire of different color hues and some with a feeder waterway, some with koi! I can imagine that it’s fun and gorgeous to take a boat out into the pond when the season opens. Both ends of the trail include a visitor center with food and shops and some parking. We walked from Urubandai Lake Resort. I think you could also walk from Mercure hotel.
