The Okunomiya Summit Shrine (奥宮 頂上社) is located at the summit of Mt. Ishizuchi, on Misen Peak, at an elevation of 1,982 meters, making it the highest point in western Japan. Staff are present at the shrine from May 1 to November 3. This sacred site marks the place where Ishizuchi Okami descended, and the path to the summit is known for its challenging “chain ascents” (鎖の行場). These include the Trial Chain, First Chain, Second Chain, and Third Chain, with a combined length of about 230 meters. Climbing these chains over the steep rocky terrain is a spiritual test, requiring participants to let go of worldly thoughts and experience a state of selflessness.

Within the Summit Shrine, three sacred statues representing different divine virtues are enshrined: one holding a jewel, one holding a mirror, and one holding a sword. Visitors can participate in a special ritual known as “Gonaijiniri,” which allows them to directly touch the sacred statues and receive the...

Fantastic hike from Tsuchi-Goya hut. A lot of wild sakura trees were blooming when we went. Option to climb the last 130m elevation with assisted iron chains on a...
