I used public transport. From bus stop till the entrance of the temple, it was about 20mins worth of walking up slope. Not sure if it’s because I fell sick a few days ago and have not yet recovered or what, but that walk felt like a hike. If you have access to a motorised vehicle, please just use that. Once you’re up there though, it’s really quiet and peaceful. Absolutely no one.
Entrance to the cave requires entrance fee - 300yen. Here i need to warn everyone that there are several flight of steps, both up and down, to get to the actual cave. And they are steep and very uneven. So uneven that one of the steps is almost like a slippery slope sliding down to the step below it. And i unfortunately stepped on that, and slipped and fell. Got some nasty scratches on my legs and sprained my wrist. :( Hold on to the rails for your life. Or wear better shoes with grippier outsoles. I think it’s a me problem though since others don’t seem to be having this issue.
Also noticed several spider silk in the way like across the stairs. Just be careful of running into spiders.
Be sure to check the bus timings if you’re coming by public transport - they have very limited trips in a day. Download taxi apps like GO in advance...
Read moreThe entrance to the cave must go through the Unganzenji temple. It's not that hard to visit here. Just find the way to Sakuramachi Bus Terminal and get on the U3-1 bus at 10:30am (ask the info counter to make sure). Then drop at Iwado Kannon Iriguchi stop and walk up the hill around 20-30 mins. You can get the bus back to town at the same stop at 02:41pm. If you're Musashi's fan, it's worth to...
Read moreIf you are into history and know about Miyamoto Musashi, this cave is a must visit. It is small but gorgeous. However, be aware that the cave is quite far from Kumamoto Station and the bus is hard to reach and time. I went by taxi and on my way back I met Chris from US who offered to drive my back to Kumamoto Station. Thanks again Chris! Should you ever come to Zurich, let me know, I will...
