This cave temple is straight out of indiana jones, - we went on a rainy day which was actually perfect because there was noone else around and the light rain made it seem even more mystical and eerie. you pay around 300 yen at the door. theres some artefacts at the door in a glass case with supposedly dragon skin petrified and musashi's paddle/wooden sword which was used in a his famous final duel. and as you walk through there are small carvings of 500 bhuddist monks that achieved enlightment then you walk some more and there is a cave where musashi meditated. this cave was used as mystical spot in ancient times so predates most of the bhuddist period. definately reccomend going if your into seeing mystical...

This place is known for where the Miyamoto Musashi spent his last days and where he wrote the Book of Five Rings. The cave is outside of Kumamoto and quite difficult to reach with public transportation. I spent 5'000¥ for the taxi. The temple and cave are nice and the place is a must visit if you know Miyamoto Musashi. It was pretty empty. I luckily met an American (Chris) who was kind enough to take me back to Kumamoto Station! If you read this Chris, many thanks again!!! If you ever come to Zurich,...

Really tranquil place, with lots of history and a must if you're at all a fan of Miyamoto Musashi as it was where the book of five rings was written.

There is a car park next to the shrine so drive all the way down if coming by car. Also note there are a lot of very steep steps within the shrine itself if you have mobility issues.

Well worth the visit if you're...
