Matsuo Taisha, located in Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto, is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kyoto, with a history dating back to 701 AD. It enshrines Ōyamakui-no-Kami, a deity of mountains, water, and brewing. As a result, it is particularly revered by sake brewers across Japan, who visit to pray for successful and high-quality brewing.

Nestled at the base of the Arashiyama mountains, the shrine is surrounded by tranquil forests and clear streams. The main shrine building, constructed in the ancient Shinmei-zukuri architectural style, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, reflecting the refined elegance of the Heian period.

A unique feature of Matsuo Taisha is the presence of “Kame-ishi” (Turtle Stones) and “Kame-ike” (Turtle Pond). It is believed that touching the turtle stones brings longevity and good fortune. The shrine is also famous for its yamabuki (Japanese Kerria) garden, which blooms beautifully in mid-April, filling the grounds with vibrant yellow flowers.

One of the shrine’s major annual events is the “Matsuo Festival” held every April, which has a history of over 1,000 years. The festival features traditional mikoshi (portable shrine) processions and river rituals, showcasing Kyoto’s deep-rooted cultural heritage.

With its historical significance, spiritual atmosphere, and scenic beauty, Matsuo Taisha is not only a place of worship but also a popular tourist destination in...

A shrine dedicated to the god of sake. A few minutes walk from the train station, this is a small complex of buildings, including a sake museum just before the entrance. Everything is beautifully maintained. It strikes me as a very active and community minded shrine, celebrating and commemorating many local occasions. It doesn't officially open until 9:00am, but I was able to just walk in at 8:00, when it was cool and although busy with workers, there were no other visitors. I particularly enjoyed the garden, with a stream running through it. It was a peaceful place, despite being so close to the station and a busy...

Matsunoo Taisha Shrine is a serene and historic gem in Kyoto, known for its unique connection to sake brewing and its beautiful natural surroundings. The shrine’s large torii gate, peaceful atmosphere, and stunning garden with cascading waterfalls make it a perfect spot to relax and reflect.

The koi pond and moss-covered grounds add to its charm, and the shrine’s sake barrels are a fascinating cultural highlight. It’s slightly off the beaten path, making it less crowded and even more enjoyable. A great place to experience Kyoto’s rich traditions and...
