Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art / Ceramic Art Messe Mashiko 益子陶芸美術館/陶芸メッセ・益子 — free parking, ¥600 entrance ticket (I don’t recommend going here.)

You can’t take photos and there aren’t many things to see at all. Not worth the ¥600 entrance fee. Waste of time. This is from someone who loves going to pottery towns in Japan. There aren’t ceramics here at all just little photos. If you want to save money and see ceramics go to nearby Yamani Otsuka やまに大塚 (there are so many Mashiko-ware ceramics here and also a gallery...

A small museum dedicated to ceramic works. Modern and pleasant. Hamada et al. works including Bernard Leach ceramics. Second floor is about the history of Mashiko ceramics. You can also visit next door buildings including Hamada original residence.

Pleasant coffee shop across the ticket office where you can select your favourite Mashiko cup and have coffee. Attached is a small shop. Ceramic dishes by local artists selling there could...

An amazing experience. The precinct is huge, has 2 working woodfired kilns, including a massive anagama. Both fire to porcelain temps. There's shops and studios galore with literally tonnes of ceramics from dozens of potters. A clay lovers wet dream! The exhibition hall is a study in exquisite ceramics by Japanese & English masters. Entry fee is minimal, even less if...

Superb museum and an amazing ceramic exhibition with the most amount of Lucie Rie and Hans Coper collected in one place in my whole life (for the exhibition British London School). A sizeable collection of Hamada’s work too. If you are into ceramic art, this is an oasis of ceramic art. Highly recommended!
