It’s very evident that the majority of negative reviews originate from people that only walked the main “trail” from Taisho Ike pond to Myojin Bridge. This is an accessible trail for people with no hiking experience, limited mobility etc.
Don’t let their cynicism fool you. Kamikochi has so much more to offer than this, even on a day trip. There are hiking trails that are off the beaten track, immersed in dense forest while the crystal blue water rushes past, and families of monkeys run along side you. We saw one or two other hikers once every 5-10 minutes once we continued on beyond the basic trail.
We were shook by how beautiful Kamikochi was, even in the peak of summer when the water levels were significantly lower than they can get. We can’t wait to see Kamikochi in full flow when we come again in a different season.

There are bears here so it is advisable to carry a bell, which you can buy at a souvenir shop. There are bells along the route. Access is only allowed by bus or taxi, no private vehicles are allowed here. There are restaurants at the entrance and along the route. Stay on the marked route as not to get lost.
