My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights - and we subsequently agreed that this was our favourite lodge/hotel of the whole 2.5 weeks' holiday travelling around Japan. It is a small and cosy lodge in a quiet spot in the woods, 5 minutes' walk from the bus station; there are perhaps 6 or 7 rooms in total. ||||Rooms are quite spacious, tatami-lined in traditional style with a small separate sitting area by the window. There is an on-suite toilet and a sink, also TV and kettle (some green tea sachets were supplied) - but for bathing you have to go downstairs to the bath house: separate for men and women, each is a small suite comprising a changing room and a washing room with 3 washing/shower stations and one bath which is perfect for 1 or 2 (I had it all to myself on all 3 days); hairdryer and amenities are available in the changing room. The futons, which you roll out yourself at night, are very comfortable (that is, if you are used to sleeping on the floor - if not, they may seem a bit thin at first; but we have slept on much thinner ones). ||||Breakfast (at 7.30am) and dinner (6pm) are served in the dining room at Western-style tables (i.e. you are not sitting on the floor). Both are a traditional multi-dish affair - and we really liked the food: it was relatively simple (by comparison to some elaborate dishes you might get at more up-market ryokans) but delicious, with plenty of local produce such as fish and vegetables, ample variety and quite plentiful, which is perfect for spending days hiking in the mountains, we hardly needed any lunch. The miso soup alone could be considered a satysfying meal with all the root vegetables it contained.||||The small team of staff are delightful and very friendly; some basic English is spoken. Each morning we were asked where we were heading (we went up on long hikes into the mountains) - good to see safety of the guests being taken so seriously; one would normally only encounter this at higher mountain huts. They also took care to enquire whether we had the right gear (waterproofs etc).||||As mentioned earlier, this is not a luxury hotel but a basic albeit very comfortable lodge / guest house - but we preferred it to the look of the various large anonymous hotels which are in the vicinity. Peaceful and friendly place to stay in Kamikochi with...
