四国八十八ヵ所霊場の参拝でお伺いしました。 真言宗醍醐派のお寺で熊野山妙見院八坂寺といい、霊場第四十七番札所になります。 御本尊は恵心僧都の作と伝わる阿弥陀如来です。 お遍路の父と呼ばれる衛門三郎の屋敷があったとされる文殊院がすぐ側にある。 八坂寺は修験道の開祖である役行者小角が開基されたと伝わり、千三百年の歴史を有する古いお寺である。 紀州から熊野権現の分霊や十二社権現を奉祀して修験道の根本道場となり、「熊野八坂寺」とも呼ばれるようになり境内に十二坊・末寺が四十八寺と隆盛をきわめ、僧兵を抱えるほど栄えたが天正年間の兵火で焼失したのが皮切りとなり再興と火災が重なってしまい末寺もほとんど無くなり寺の規模は縮小の一途をたどった。 八坂寺で毎年四月二十九日に行われる大祭の「柴澄大護摩供火渡り修行」が有名です、修験道の道場だったた...

自転車遍路でお邪魔しました。 47番札所八坂寺は、46番札所浄瑠璃寺と同じ町内にあり、距離も1kmほどしか離れていません。 八坂寺は、田園のゆるやかな坂の上にありました。 8か所の坂道を切り開いて創建したことが八坂という寺号の由来で、「いやさか（八坂）」にも通じる目出度い言葉です。 修験道の祖・役小角（えんのおづむ）により開かれ、701年（大宝元年）、文武天皇の勅願により創建したと伝わります。 815年（弘仁6年）に弘法大師が再興したそうです。 最盛期には、48の末寺をもつ修験道の道場として栄えました。 本尊の阿弥陀如来坐像は、恵心僧都（えしんそうず）の作と伝えられ、50年に一度開帳される秘仏だそうです。
