What an amazing experience to be so close to a crater of an active volcano, which is pushing out Sulphur clouds continuously. Do beware of the strong odur of Sulphur, some people may experience discomfort.

The day we went was beautiful sunshine but it was very cold the time we were there only 1 degree. We could also experience snow on top of Mount Aso which was a real treat.

Do be aware that it is all about timing when visiting the crater, and weather conditions but if you time it right it's an overwhelming experience.

It's amazing to see the most active volcano up so close. It's like being in another world, nothing grows, desertless and serial. Great experience for any volcano lovers.

Again it's all about timing when you go here. If the warning hits a certain level you cannot go to the crater and access...

Nakadake No. 1 Crater, located at the heart of Mount Aso in Kumamoto, is one of Japan’s most awe-inspiring active volcanoes. With a massive, steam-breathing crater that stretches over 600 meters wide, it offers a dramatic and up-close look at the raw power of nature. The vibrant colors of the crater walls and the often-milky green water within give it an almost otherworldly feel.

Reaching the crater is surprisingly easy—there’s a large parking area just a short walk from the main viewing spots, making it accessible for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re a nature lover, a geology enthusiast, or simply in search of a unique landscape, Nakadake No. 1 Crater is a must-see.

Do note that access may vary depending on volcanic activity, so it’s always a good idea to check conditions...

You can take the bus from Aso Station to Asosanjo Terminal, with the journey taking just over 30 mins. No reservation is required, but is a good idea to arrive early especially during weekends when buses can fill up quickly.

There is a shuttle from Asosanjo Terminal to the crater rim, though the 10-15mins uphill walk offers beautiful scenic views and is well worth it.

At the top, you’ll find the crater observation platform, offering a truly stunning volcanic landscape.

Access to the crater depends on volcanic activity, so it’s best to check conditions in advance.

Overall I had an awesome experience and highly recommend a visit if you’re...
