Dear Aso Volcano Management Office,
we recently visited Mount Aso and had an absolutely unforgettable experience. The landscape was stunning, the atmosphere unique, and as Europeans, we felt truly lucky to witness such powerful nature up close. It was a highlight of our trip to Japan!
We did, however, unintentionally find ourselves walking along a trail near the crater — and only later realized that it was probably part of a restricted area. The path was not clearly marked, and the fences in that section were broken or incomplete. Since there were no clear signs in English (or any other languages than Japanese), it was hard to tell whether we should continue or turn back.
Luckily, we are both young, very fit, and used to hiking. For us, the distance and conditions were no problem — but for people without proper footwear, equipment, or physical condition, it could be dangerous.
We just wanted to suggest: • Adding clear signs in multiple languages (especially at decision points on trails), • Repairing or strengthening barriers where needed, • Offering simple guidance on how far trails go, what kind of equipment is recommended, and at what point it’s best to turn back.
Again, thank you for giving us this amazing experience. We share this feedback only in the hope that it helps make future visits even safer and more enjoyable for...

We arrived in the morning when it first opened and a kind lady was at the gate, we paid 1000 yen and she gave us a map and slip showing that we can re-enter. We saw the crater for about 3 minutes before it got too toxic. We left and came back about an hour later, showing our slip and receipt to the man at the gate but he kept yelling at us in Japanese and told us to make a U-turn and leave despite all of the areas being open and other cars were going through. We pointed to the text on the slip that said we can re-enter but he just kept yelling at us and directed us to exit without explaining anything. This was our first time encountering someone so unpleasant in Japan. Better off just walking up so you don’t have to deal with overpriced parking...
Read moreThis is the closest car park to the active crater and only a few minutes walk. It costs ¥1000 toll on the road leading up to it and no other cost once you park. If this is full, there is a smaller car park back down the hill which has about 20 spaces. Alternatively, you can park for free at Aso square on the side by the police station. The opposite side charges ¥500. It is a 25 minute walk to the active crater from here which is all up hill...
