Quick but detailed guide of how to get here and what to do is incoming! See my photos for maps and trail info.
This is a areat park for hiking casual but especially scenic trails. It's free to visit and easy to reach by train from Hakodate. Take the LOCAL train to the Onumakoen station. The other train option is a limited express which is only slightly faster but significantly more expensive. You can use an IC card to reach the park but must pay for a ticket in cash (~¥680 as of June 2025) at the local to return to Hakodate (unless you reserved a pricier seat on the limited express). There is an atm in town at the post office and it's shown on Google maps.
Visit from mid May to early June for the best flower view. There are thousands of azaleas and lilacs in the park along with the vibrant green forest. Bring mosquito repellent. The blue trail has the best views. Start with that, then finish with the red trail. It should take only a couple of hours tops unless you want to truly lounge or do something else. Trails are extremely well marked and mapped. The ice cream vendor by the train station sells awesome...
Read moreI really love this place. I went there on March 3rd and it was so ‘beautiful in white’.. I rode ‘go kart on ice’ there.. people called it snowmobile.. For you guys who doesn’t drive, u don’t need any license and trust me.. it s easier than driving a car.. don’t miss this experience! It only cost you ¥1000-1500 / person and you can enjoy 2 laps (it s around 10-20 min), however it worth every penny (well, at least for me)
The weather was 3 degrees Celcius. The ice was starting to melt and few areas were wet, so make sure u wear a proper pair of shoes because it is quite slippery 🙊🙊
There are several shops nearby the snowmobile area. You can either shop cute souvenirs or grab unique flavored ice creams or both.. I recommend you to taste squid ink flavour or lavender flavour.. they also sell other food like kaarage, boiled potato, takoyaki, etc..
For sure, I’m going to visit this place again...
Read moreMy top 3 activities that you should definitely do if you travel here during the winter period ( Nov ~ March ). ** snow mobiling ( you have the options to ride by yourself, 2 people or groups using a sledge attach to the snow mobile ).
** ワカサギ釣り ( wakasagi fishing )! This kind of activity involves placing a fishing rod ( with bait ) and place it through a hole drilled in lake. This is a really great bonding experience for couples and family plus, a good way to experience patience ! P.S the only edible fish ( wakasagi ) can be used later on to make tempura in the store ! If it’s your first time doing this, you will have an instructor guide you.
** Walking around the islands dotted around the lake that are connect by bridges. Best place to experience breath taking landscape such a the Mt. Komagatake . Perfect place for photographers...
