訪問日は2025年1月31日。世界遺産の斎場御嶽を訪問するのが沖縄訪問の旅の目的でもあったので、厳かな気持ちで観光させていただきました。最初にビデオで、概要を知り実際に、園内を歩きました。 以下に、一次情報として現地の案内板やパンフレットに記載されていた内容を示します。 これから訪問を検討されている方の参考になればと思います。

「琉球王国のグスク及び関連遺産群」 The Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu

世界遺産 2000年12月2日、斎場御嶽は「琉球王国のグスク及び関連遺産群」のひとつとして、ユネスコの「世界遺産条約」に基づく世界遺産リストに登録されました。 全世界の人々のために保護すべき遺産として、特に優れて普遍的な価値のあるものが、このリストに登録されます。

World Heritage On December 2, 2000 the Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu, including Sêfa-utaki, were inscribed on the World Heritage List under the terms of the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Inscription on this list confirms the exceptional and universal value of a cultural or natural site which requires protection for the benefit of all humanity.

斎場御嶽(せーふぁうたき) 「御嶽」とは、奄美諸島から宮古・八重山にいたる南西諸島に広く分布している聖地の総称です。斎場御嶽は、琉球王朝時代に王府が整備した国家的な宗教組織との関連が深い、格式の高い祭祀場でありました。せーふぁ(霊威の高い聖なる場所)の名前が示すように、巨岩や聖樹に囲まれた空間には、首里城内にある部屋名と同じ名前の拝所があり、当時の王府と斎場御嶽の関わりの深さをみることができます。琉球最高神女である聞得大君の、就任儀礼「お新下り」の御名付けがこの地で行われたということは、王権を信仰面・精神面から支えていた証でもありましょう。現在でも、聖地 巡拝の習慣を残す東御廻り(あがいうまーい)の聖地として、参拝客は後を絶ちません。

Sêfa-utaki The term utaki generally refers to sacred places located throughout Japan's southwest islands including the Amami, Miyako and Yaeyama Islands. Sefa-utaki was regarded as extremely holy and had strong ties with the official religious organization established by the Ryukyu Kingdom government during its era. As the name Sêfa (a place holding divine power) defines, the area surrounded by huge rocks and sacred trees shelters ceremonial altars named alike for rooms in Shuri-jo and represents the close relationship it had with the royal government. The inauguration and special deifying rituals of Ryukyu's highest-ranking priestesses, Kikoe Ogimi, at this site prove that Sêfa-utaki provided the royal authority both religious and mental support. Even now, this sacred site attracts many worshippers who continue the customary and sacred Agaiumaai pilgrimage.

【パンフレットより】 斎場御嶽とは 御嶽とは、南西諸島に広く分布している「聖地」の総称で、斎場御嶽は琉球開びゃく伝説にもあらわれる、琉球王国最高の聖地です。また、琉球国王や聞得大君(きこえおおきみ)の聖地巡拝の行事を今に伝える「東御廻(あがりうまーい)り」の参拝地として、現在も多くの人々から崇拝されています。 御嶽の中には六つのイビ(神域)があります。琉球国王はこの六ケ所を参拝しながら、国家繁栄・安寧、五穀豊穣、航海安全などを神に祈願しました。はるかなる琉球王国時代、国家的な祭事には聖なる白砂を「神の島」といわれる久高島から特別に運び入れ、それを御嶽に敷きつめました。その中でも、最も大きな行事が、聞得大君の就任式である「御新下り(おあらうり)」でした。

聖地を訪れる方へのお願い 敬う心構えで 聖地は祈りの場所だということを忘れないでください。 ガイドとともに回ることをお勧めします 沖縄独特の祈りの文化を知るために、ガイドをご利用ください。(有料) 祈りをさえぎらないでください 拝みをしている人たちにみだりに声をかけたり、写真を撮ったりしないでください。 聖地内にあるものを持ち出さない 石や動植物を記念に持ち帰らないでください。 香炉は神聖な物です 拝所に据えられた四角い石を香炉といい、この上にお線香を置いて神に祈ります。座ったり物を置いたりしないでください。

用語解説 東御廻り(あがりうまーい) 琉球の創世神アマミキヨが渡来し、住みついたと伝えられる知念・玉城の聖地を巡拝する行事。 首里城から見て、大里・佐敷・知念・玉城を東四間切(あがりゆまぎり)または東方(あがりかた)といったこと から、知念・玉城の拝所巡礼を(東御廻り)と称した。

御新下り(おあらうり) 聞得大君が最高神職に就任する儀式。首里における儀礼を終え、いくつかの要所を経て、知念間切(ちねんまぎり)にある斎場御嶽に入り、数々の儀式を執り行った。聞得大君は、聖水を額に付ける「御水撫で(うびぃなでぃ)」の儀式で神霊を授かり、神と同格になったといわれ 。

聞得大君(きこえおおきみ) 聞得大君とは「最も名高い神女」という意味で、琉球の信仰における神女の最高位の呼称。琉球王国最高位の権力者である国王と王国全土を霊的に守護する存在とされた。そのため、国王の姉妹など王族の女性が任命された。初代(1470年)から15代(1875年)までの400年余りにわたって、琉球王府の神事を担った。

We drove down to check out this Japan World Heritage site this past weekend. I checked prior to arrival that you had to purchase tickets. I read ¥200 for adults and ¥100 for kids. When I purchased tickets via the vending machine the price had gone up ¥100 for both adults and kids. No biggie on my end, but I want others to be prepared. You walk across the street from the welcome center and about a quarter mile before you arrive at the site. When you start your walk you will hand over your ticket and receive a brochure in your language. You can walk at your own pace and take as many pictures as you want throughout the park. We spent around an hour walking/viewing/taking pictures with our boys. Be sure and read each marker for details at each spot (there's English which is rare for most Japan sites).
