I came here with my sister on a day trip from Osaka to Kyoto. Take the train to Shugakuin station (there are several combinis and supermarkets near by to pick up food for the hike up), walk east towards the weir, and the hike will feel like hell for the first bit, but as you get a rhythm going, it gets easier, and the views you get of Kyoto and osaka aren’t bad. I’m a novice hiker and it was okay for me, so I believe in you!! My sister and I made it to the summit in about 3-3.5 hours (there are actually 2 summits, but only 1 has the sign indicating so). It was awesome to climb it, and I was sweating like crazy, but it was thrilling and I felt really accomplished at the end (I took the Sakamoto cable car down the other side of the mountain because I was dead after hiking up lol) Also it is not crowded at all as everyone in Kyoto is busy being present at the touristy locations.

There isnt a great lot to do here. Came here for autumn but due to fall being delayed the foliage were not as red as expected. Experience snow fall instead. One can take the bus up or the cable car. My suggestion if dont do the cable car round trip but do the cable car from one side of the summit to the other. We started from Yase station.

We hiked around Mt Hiei during summer, and it was really nice to enjoy the cooler temperature at the top along with the stunning views and the peace and quiet. It was really fun taking the cable car and ropeway up, and we then spent 2.5hrs walking. Super easy to navigate with a trail map from the cable car station.
