I came here with my sister on a day trip from Osaka to Kyoto. Take the train to Shugakuin station (there are several combinis and supermarkets near by to pick up food for the hike up), walk east towards the weir, and the hike will feel like hell for the first bit, but as you get a rhythm going, it gets easier, and the views you get of Kyoto and osaka aren’t bad. I’m a novice hiker and it was okay for me, so I believe in you!! My sister and I made it to the summit in about 3-3.5 hours (there are actually 2 summits, but only 1 has the sign indicating so).
