If you're down that way to see the World Heritage site, you should pay the 200 yen to see this museum, and if you have the time, pay extra for the audio tour. This is a small museum packed dense with artifacts going back over 1500 years, with about an equal split between the Kofun era for which you're probably down that way, and the history of the following millennium and change. Good introductory video, and while many of the placards are only in Japanese, I suspect the audio tour is nice. The section overviews do have four languages. It's a dense museum that covers an interesting era of history and has a lot of really old pieces of interest.
The park it is in is quite great, as is the information center just north across the street which has a good overview of all...
Read moreI visited this museum on February 2, 2024. I saw some mixed reviews about the museum before I went, but I decided to visit anyway. I really enjoyed my visit! To me, it was really special to be near the konfun, and see some of the artifacts rescued through excavations over the years. The exhibitions gave me a totally different understanding of how the konfun looked originally, and how they were used as ceremonial sites. It's obviously not a major museum of Japan, but I really appreciated what they are able to do for visitors. I think I spent about 1.5 hours looking at the artifacts, and I imagined that I would have spent about 45 minutes when I was entering. So, go visit this museum; they do...
Read moreA volunteer guide in this museum made my day! He was very knowledgeable about the city's history and kofun. He pointed out the most important artifacts in the museum's exhibit and showed me more maps, photos, drawings, and tables in his tablet. His English was excellent and I was impressed that he was only doing this as a volunteer. Thank you for a great day in Sakai! I would highly recommend visitors to view a short movie in the theater to learn some fascinating facts about the size and construction of kofun. The Nintoku kofun is larger than the biggest Egyptian pyramid in Giza! The ticket price for this museum is very cheap, only 200 JPY, and the theater can even me accessed...
