SUMMER SEASON REVIEW. To get here (my experience), take the street tram just outside the Susukino subway exit. You can't miss it, you'll see a terminal on the middle of the road where there are some sort of mini rail tracks on the ground leading the tram way. Take the tram that says "outer-loop" as it is nearer from this terminal, prolly around 20-25 mins of transit time. Go down at the Iriguchi ropeway terminal. The tram dictates the stops both in Nihongo and English, so don't worry, you will definitely know when you're there. From the terminal, just walk a couple of meters (google map it) to the free bus stop to take you to the ropeway. The ropeway office has a live cam from the summit and it shows you if the view is good or not before you decide to buy a ticket. This specific view can also be found on their website so just google it before you even decide to go. We took the roundtrip ticket (1700yen as of 2018) to the summit and it had a breathtaking view going up and down. The summit view deck was just a small roof top but had the whole view of Hokkaido. It had binoculars you had to pay 100yen to use and drink vending machines as well. You'll probably spend 40-60mins there max. If you're in Hokkaido this is definitely a must-visit place.

One of the best night view I have ever seen (have been to many cities with mountains nearby). The view is special as it is almost 360 panoramic. I didn’t take ropeway and decided to hike. It takes 1 hour for the hike and the trail isn’t that bad. I was a bit too adventurous and started hiking solo around 6:30 pm. Didn’t meet anyone for long and it was starting to get dark. Fortunately had mobile reception all the time, so I wasn’t worried and I kept going till I reached top to get this awesome view. How reach by tram: Take tram till “Ropeway Iruguchi”. This tram goes in circle. So, direction of travel depends on where you board. Just next to tram stop, take free shuttle to Moiwa Sanroku ropeway station (or walk for 5 mins). Take ropeway, reach middle station, take cable car to reach There was s bear sighting the day I hiked (came to know about it when I hiked again after 2 days). So, better carry a bear 🔔

The cable car to the top is not exactly cheap, but it does offer stunning views of Sapporo in return. I initially wanted to visit at sunset, but I got there later and had to “settle” for the night view. It really gave me a better understanding of the size of the city, and the lights (that include a large number of sodium lamps which have a warm, orange glow) do look magical against the darkness of the night. At 531m above the sea level, Mt. Moiwa’s observation deck seems to be quite popular, and the panoramic view it offers has apparently been certified as one of the top 100 places for moon viewing in Japan. Make sure you pack a sweater, though, as it can get chilly in the evening.

Offers superb view of Sapporo city skyline. Visited during winter. I went there early in the morning, when the entire landscape was covered in a fresh blanket of snow (before the crowd came in to ruin the snowscape). The observatory is accessible via the ropeway. The base station is near the Ropeway Iriguchi tram station. It was 8 stations (14 min) away from Susukino. However, the walk to the base station was uphill, so beware. There's a cafe up there, but there is also places to rest indoors. So one can also bring food up there to "picnic", instead of dining at the cafe. Check the weather forecast too, to avoid cloudy days, especially in winter.

The view from mountain top was nice. It was unexpectedly cold when we visited, perhaps it was the consecutive rains on those days. The observatory could be reached after taking a ride on the cable car and a connecting funicular. Both required a long long long time of queuing. Since most people were visiting there for the night view of Sapporo city, the crowd would always be huge after sunset, and more lethally, most shops serving food or even selling souvenirs closed early. The queuing system was very rigid, this obviously harmed the business of the shops at the connecting port between cable car and funicular.
