Visiting Mt. Moiwa was one of the highlights of my trip to Sapporo. If you are in the city, I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary — especially in the evening!
To reach the top, you need to take the ropeway (cable car), which costs 700 yen one-way (round trip is available too). The ride itself is smooth and enjoyable, offering great views as you ascend the mountain. Once you arrive at the upper station, there is an additional mini cable lift to reach the very top observation deck, which is definitely worth taking.
The real magic begins at the summit observation deck. I went up in the evening to catch the famous night view of Sapporo, and it was absolutely breathtaking. The entire city lights up below you — an endless sea of sparkling lights stretching out into the distance. It’s one of the most beautiful city night views I’ve seen in Japan, and it’s very romantic and peaceful at the top.
The facilities are well-maintained, and there is a small souvenir shop and café where you can relax while enjoying the view. Everything is very well organized, and the experience felt smooth from start to finish.
For just 700 yen for the ropeway, this is an experience that is absolutely worth it. Whether you are traveling solo, with friends, or as a couple, the view is something you shouldn’t miss. I would especially recommend going up around sunset and staying to watch the city lights appear — it’s truly memorable.
If you’re visiting Sapporo, don’t...

To get here (my experience), take the street tram just outside the Susukino subway exit. You can't miss it, you'll see a terminal on the middle of the road where there are some sort of mini rail tracks on the ground leading the tram way.
Take the tram that says "outer-loop" as it is nearer from this terminal, prolly around 20-25 mins of transit time. Go down at the Iriguchi ropeway terminal. The tram dictates the stops both in Nihongo and English, so don't worry, you will definitely know when you're there. From the terminal, just walk a couple of meters (google map it) to the free bus stop to take you to the ropeway.
The ropeway office has a live cam from the summit and it shows you if the view is good or not before you decide to buy a ticket. This specific view can also be found on their website so just google it before you even decide to go.
We took the roundtrip ticket (1700yen as of 2018) to the summit and it had a breathtaking view going up and down. The summit view deck was just a small roof top but had the whole view of Hokkaido. It had binoculars you had to pay 100yen to use and drink vending machines as well.
You'll probably spend 40-60mins there max. If you're in Hokkaido this is definitely a...
Read moreHai! I'm from Sarawak, Borneo (Malaysia). I have been here early this year. (January 2017) Mount Moiwa (Ropeway) should be in your itinerary if you going to Sapporo. The view of Sapporo city from the top of Mount Moiwa are very amazing. Snow are everywhere and for a someone who come from the hot Equatorial climate just like me, the snow & the cold temperature around -7°C that time are more than enough for me to make that moment become my precious memories that I'll remember in my lifetime. Access to Mount Moiwa are also very easy. Just take a tram (streetcar) from the city centre around Susukino, Nakajima, or Odori then stop at Mount Moiwa base centre intersection (on the right side) of the road. After that, walk in a distance from the tram stop to take a free shuttle bus going to the Mount Moiwa Ropeway terminal. Fare for the streetcar from Susukino stop to Mount Moiwa stop is ¥170 (RM6.12) & the the ropeway & mini cable car fare for return trip is...
