If you want to beat the heat and have fun while doing it, this is the perfect place, especially if you have kids! Our family spent the entire day here and around the wharf where the aquarium is located. An aquarium ticket lasts a whole day with the QR code. We were able to go in early in the morning, get some exhibits looked at, pop out for a fresh sushi lunch at the nearby Karato Fish Market, and then pop back into the aquarium to look some more or revisit previous exhibits. The dolphin shows were amazing, but definitely get there 30 min early for seats, and not every show is the same since they change the animals sometimes. Our favorite spot to rest was the sofa area in the corner of the Subantarctic Penguins on B1F. If you get there around 1:00 PM, you'll see angelic light streaming down the tank water which was stunningly beautiful when the penguins would swim and dive with a trail of bubbles behind! There are English translations for almost everything displayed, but no interpreters for whatever the caretakers are saying, but translating apps come in real handy for those times! Definitely recommend going...

A great attraction of Kanmon Strait. Good aquarium design and facilities for families with young kids. The featured penguin village was awesome. The sardines were swimming like a vortex and there was a giant mambo fish. They also housed several tanks displaying babies of the local puffer fish. All fish seemed pretty active.
For access by Shinkansen, it would be more convenient to stop at Kokura Station and transferring to the local train to Shimonoseki than stopping at Shinshimonoseki Station. The more frequent schedule of faster trains from Kokura makes a day...
Read moreGood aquarium staff not the most kind. Visited with our little one and she loved it. Not huge but okay size. You can touch the penguins or the dolphin if you are in time. You are asked to choose between the two activities I guess I'm order to make sure everyone has a chance to try one or the other and leave room for everyone. The place was deserted on our visit on a typhoon day so we went to check last minute if we could also touch the dolphin since there was no-one registered for the activity didn't have the chance to say a word and were told you can't come back you did one already. End of conversation. Why not make a little girl happy if no one is there for an activity closed mind or lack of kindness don't know but common sense for all...
