We came as a couple on foot to enjoy the onsen for my birthday, but we were unpleasantly surprised to see this sign at the entrance to the building and at the reception desk, which was a bit xenophobic (obviously it wasn't written on their website). Decorative tattoos of any kind are prohibited, and this is the ONLY information sign written in English in the entire building.
The fact that we are French residents of Japan and that my girlfriend speaks fluent Japanese was irrelevant to the two people at the reception desk. There is no critical thinking on the part of the staff and no patches for sale to cover small tattoos, as in other onsen. This shows that it is a âJapanese onlyâ country onsen.
Let's be clear, this sign showing a random tattoo ban is disguised xenophobia, because it does not show Japanese tattoos as in other onsens. What threat are you afraid of from a 5'1" French woman with a 5x5 cm tattoo on her ankle?...
