This is really pretty, but it wasn’t really worth it to be honest. I had to park at the Takachiho-jinja Shrine and walk almost a kilometre along the road to get there. There is no parking on site. The road is a steep winding road down the gorge with no provisions for pedestrians. Admission was free, but I ended up spending 700 yen to get a taxi back to the shrine because it was so steep, hot, and dangerous to walk along. There were a lot of people there and only a handful of vantage points, so people weren’t very patient. Add to that the fact that it took two hours to drive there from Oita, and it quickly lost its appeal. Another tourist attraction lacking infrastructure that has become a victim of its own success. This place is not accessible for the mobility impaired. There are toilets and a few small shops nearby to buy a drink / souvenir.
