The hotel is located within walking distance to many key tourist spots - gorge, market, shrines, etc. They serve great food. The rooms are more spacious than most comparable hotels.
My most memorable experience here was the fervent focus of the staff - particularly Sato, Bhujel and Anu - who over extended themselves to rescue my ruined holiday in Japan. We met with a mishap in Aso and arrived Takachiho with no Yen; not a single dime. The 3 of them very quickly made sure we 1. secured an inexpensive, credit card powered, convenient bus ride back to kumamoto, 2. actively planned for us meaningful activities in Takachiho that night as well as the folllowing morning, and 3. rearranged guest appointments at their restaurant to squeeze us in so that we need not head out for dinner, risking to waste time looking for small local shops which mostly do not accept credit cards.
I am very grateful for their help and find myself constantly thinking about kindness and generosity thanks to them. A vacation gone bad can turnaround in the same day is truly a miracle. Thank u Sato, Bhujel and Anu. Thank u Solest...

Located approx 5 minute drive from Takachiho Gorge or a 1 min drive (5 min walk) from the Takachiho Shrine.
New, clean and modern hotel (as of 2023). Well-decorated lobby and rooms, with all the rooms a reasonable distance from the elevator. Our rooms were at the very end of the hallway.
One of our rooms had a poor and ridiculous set up. The shower & bathtub (separate) were in the bathroom, but the sink was outside in the hotel room itself. So when showering, you'd bring your clothes into the bathroom itself, but every time the shower turned on it would spray the whole room wet. This meant your clothes would get wet, as you could not hide them from the shower. Our other room had a standard shower bath.
Abundant free parking available for guests.
Had shabu-shabu in their restaurant for dinner which was overpriced with a very small menu otherwise. Breakfast was in the same restaurant with a fair selection. Staff were polite, both in the restaurant and...
Read moreWe had a very easy drive from Kumamoto to Takachiho to arrive at the Solest Hotel. Google maps on our phone worked perfectly to guide us and we are very impressed with internet coverage in rural Japan. It's best to have a car as public transport to this location is almost non-existent. We highly recommend this very comfortable hotel. The elegant entry gives a good indication of the atmosphere you will experience. The staff are friendly and professional, making good suggestions for places to visit and for restaurants. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms well appointed. The buffet breakfast has a huge variety of food and it was great to try more traditional Japanese foods. Make sure you book more time than you think you will need as there is SO much to enjoy in this small town and the...
