Fuchū Art Museum — Attraction in Tokyo

For a relatively small institution, this museum puts on quality exhibits, with a focus on Edo-period painting, modern art and design, and local artists. The building itself is spacious and airy while blending in to the park, but the exhibition halls are just the right size -- not too extensive that you get worn out. One plus is the location ensures there are seldom crowds, meaning you can spend quality time with the art, unlike bigger museums in central Tokyo. The gift shop is small, but has some nice things. I'd like to take off a half star for the afterthought of a cafe and the lack of English signage....

【 2024/04/29(月㊗️)初訪問 】 NHK Eテレ📺の「日曜美術館 アートシーン」で紹介されていたのを見て👀、2024/3/9(土)〜5/6(月㊗️)の期間、開催されている「春の江戸絵画まつり ほとけの国の美術」を拝観しました。

地獄や極楽の絵は平安時代から繰り返し描かれ、仏の教えを伝えました。仏教を背景に、様々な展開を見せた日本画が一堂に会する展覧会とのことです。

地獄で最も過酷とされる阿鼻(あび)の地獄絵図「地獄極楽図(阿鼻地獄)」→仏の道に背(そむ)いた者は煮えたぎる釜(かま)や剣(つるぎ)の山へ。苦しみは、他の全ての地獄の千倍とされます。 「地獄極楽図(聖衆来迎楽)」→仏の教えに従った人は極楽へ。阿弥陀如来に迎えられ、浄土で生まれ変わります。

京都市・二尊院(にそんいん)に伝わる「二十五菩薩来迎図(にじゅうごぼさつらいごうず)」は、本尊の左右に25の菩薩を配置し、お堂全体で極楽往生(ごくらくおうじょう)の光景を作り出しています。 来迎図では多くの菩薩が楽器を手にしています。ハープのような「箜篌(くご)」を奏でるのは山海恵菩薩(さんかいえぼさつ)、定自在王菩薩(じょうじざいおうぼさつ)は「火焔太鼓(かえんだいこ)」を叩きます。煌(きら)びやかな来迎図は仏の道に従う人々の拠り所(よりどころ)でした。

禅宗(ぜんしゅう)が最も普及した江戸時代。その教えを説く禅画(ぜんが)が数多く生まれたそうです。 「十六羅漢図(じゅうろくらかんず)」は、禅僧(ぜんそう)の仙崖義梵(せんがいぎぼん)が描いたものの他、何点か展示されていました。 ※羅漢(らかん)とは、悟りを開いた高僧のことです。

釈迦(しゃか)の入滅(にゅうめつ)を題材にした「八相涅槃図(ねはんず)」は、多くの寺で釈迦の命日に飾られました。釈迦の周りでは菩薩や弟子たちが悲しみに暮れていて、さらにその周りには様々な生き物がいます。白い象は普賢菩薩(ふげんぼさつ)が乗る想像上の動物で、鯨🐳は花の代わりにサンゴ🪸を手向(たむ)けています。

長沢蘆雪(ながさわろせつ)の「子犬図屏風」には、子犬の愛くるしさを引き立てる工夫が見られます。それは「ちょっと崩すこと」だそうで、子犬のやんちゃぶりが溢(あふ)れます。生き物を可愛らしく描くことにも、仏の教えが関わっているといいます。

個人的には、上記の「八相涅槃図」、観音様が鯉(こい)の背に立ち乗りしている 河鍋暁斎(かわなべ きょうさい)の「波乗り観音図屏風」、鈴木鵞湖(すずき がこ)の「十六羅漢図」などがとても印象に残っています❗️
